Warriors clawed by Panthers 67-66

By SANDY GERENCSER Bob Heady’s Warriors lost an extremely close game last Friday as they fell to the North Wood Panthers, 67-66. The conference loss removes all chances for a second place rating in the NLC as their record stands at 4-3. In the first quarter the Warriors battled back from about a four point deficit to take the lead, 14-12. They led at the period’s close, 22-19. Tad Chamberlin racked up 10 points in the quarter to help Wawasee. The second quarter saw Wawasee extend its lead to five points; however, North Wood quickly narrowed the gap. It looked as if the Warriors would take a 34-33 lead with them to the locker room, but a fast shot, by Steve Huber of North Wood gave the Panthers the halftime lead, 35-34 Ln the second half the two teams really fought it out. The Panthers would build a small lead and Wawasee would take it away. At the end of the third • stanza North Wood was on top, SO--48. The final period action was nip and tuck. The lead changed often and it was really anyone’s game. There was less than a minute to go and the score showed the Warriors 64-63 The Panthers took tiie lead away by scoring a pair of shots. Jim Stout cut the margin to one as he drove home with a lay up With but seven seconds in the game. Tad Chamberlin stole the ball. He went in for a lay up that wouldn't score, and he put up two other shots in vain as the final buzzer sounded Wawasee had five players in double figures Tad Chamberlin took top honors with 20 pants. Greg Fidler and Mark Smith each scored 11. Jim Stout, who saw limited action due to illness, and Dave Hamilton both scored 10 pants. High scorer for The Panthers was Gail Harman with 20 points. Steve Shekel notched 11 while Gene Hartman, Todd Sheets and Terry Culp each scored 10 pants

Syracuse in finals of county tournament

The Syracuse Yellow Jacket eighth grade basketball team entered the finals of the county tourney by beating Pierceton 3923 Pierceton had beaten the Jackets early in the season but were no match fa the Syracuse boys this time. Ken Patton. Rick McKibben and Bryan Smith led the Jacket charge at the beginning of the game which resulted in a 21-7 halftime lead These three boys had totaled 31 points by the end of the game. The Cubs had trouble penetrating the taller Syracuse defense and in spite of having more shots they could not get

Wawasee topped by Lakeland 75-64

By SANDY GERENCSER The Warriors fell to the Lakeland Lakers last Saturday, 75-64. Wawasee did not turn in one of its best performances as they fell to the hustling Lakers. The Lakers took an early lead. Wawasee was forced to fight back and they came to within four points at the close Os the first period, 16-12. The Warriors had trouble generating momentum against hot-handed Lakers, who topped Wawasee by as many as 13 pants in the second quarter. The halftime score showed Lakeland ahead, 38-27. The Lakers built a lead of 15 points in the third period, but Wawasee came back to within eight at the end of the quarter, 5648. The Warriors really hustled in the final period; they pulled up to within two points, 58-56. However, the Lakers came to life and, with time ticking on, they quickly rebuilt their lead. The Warriors couldn’t contain the aggressive Lakers. They got a couple of quick shots in the closing seconds but Lakeland was , out of reach. The Warriors were beaten, 75-64. Jim Stout led Wawasee with 21 points. Dave Hamilton gunned in 12. Greg Fidler and Tad Prep loses two in week end action Wawasee Prep traveled to Fort Wayne Friday night to play their host team, Bishop Dwanger, and were downed 70-48 with the host team leading throughout the entire ball game. Prep’s Leon Streeter was high man with 15-potnts, followed by Jay Muehlenkamp with 10. Cox and Marhler tallied 14-points each fa the opposing team. In Saturday action against Huntington Catholic, at Prep, Huntington took a quick 10-point lead and kept it throughout the entire game until the very last second of play. Huntington took honors with a 64-55 score. Allen Mimms and Brian Welch, both juniors at Prep, had 19 and 10-points. respectively, for the evening with Nix as high point man fa Catholic with 22. BUSINESS-PLEASURE TRIP TO LAS VEGAS Mr. and Mrs. James Butt of Syracuse returned Sunday from a week's vacation to Las Vegas Nev., where they attended the National Monument Builders association national convention. JV crushes Lakers 57-49 By SANDY GERENCSER Jerry Lambert’s young Warriors beat the Lakeland Lakers Saturday night, 57-49. "Die win makes their record 13-6. The Lakers took a commanding lead of 12 points in the first quarter; they led 17-7 at the end of the period. The Warriors fought back to within one point by the half, 25-24. The Warriors took the lead in the third period as Vince Rhodes led the attack by bucketing 10 points. Wawasee topped Lakeland at the end of the quarter. 44-36. The Warriors continued to hold their lead in the final stanza as they lanced the Lakers. 57-49. Wawasee’s scoring was led byVince Rhodes, who notched 15 points. Del Acton fired in 12 points, while Paul Miller scored eight. Doug Pollock and Dale Ganz each tallied six. The remaining scoring was as follows: Ralph Reiff four. LarryAllen three and Steve Kroh two. The Warriors will travel to Northfield on February 22 for their last game of the season. JV clips Panthers The Warrior B-team had trouble generating momentum against North Wood last Friday, but came through in the final period to win, 37-34. NathWood had Wawasee down at the end of the first period. 9-6. The Panthers continued to contain the Warriors in the second stanza and led at the half, 23-17. The third quarter saw Wawasee behind, 32-27, at its close. The Warriors finally got their drive together in the fourth period; they held the Panthers to two points. Ralph Reiff wrapped the game up as he scored the last four points. Steve Troup and Del Acton led the Warrias as they both netted eight points. Dave Wellman, Paul Miller and Ralph Reiff each scaed five points, while Doug Pollock had four. Larry Allen and Steve Kroh each added one.

Tankmen participate in sectional tourney

By SANDY GERENCSER The tankmen, who are coached by Tom Rankin, joined 12 other schools in the swimming sectional last Thursday and Saturday. Wawasee placed ninth as a team with 29 points. The top school was Goshen with 272 points and LaPorte was next with 186. Wawasee had six swimmers in the sectional finals. They were Tim Campbell, Clem Lisor, Brian Simmons, Gary Webb, Doug Rater and Dan Dieterly. Brian Simmons placed fifth in the 500 freestyle for Wawasee’s best showing. His time of 5:37.970

Three wrestlers represent Wawasee at regional tourney

By SANDY GERENCSER The Warria wrestling team, coached by Terry Frank, sent three grapplers to the IHSAA Regional high school wrestling tournament, which was held at Fort Wayne North Side, last Thursday and Saturday. The boys were Doug Brown, a senior, Dave Schopf, a junior, and Dave Doll, a sophomore. Also qualifying fa the regional was freshmen Mitch Ousley, who is in the heavyweight class; however, he was unable to participate due to illness. Doug Brown and Dave Doll both placed fourth in the meet. Doug was in the 157 pound class. He decisioned Friedel (Dekalb), 64). Doug was pinned by Horton Driver cited after accident A r 5 Goshen driver, William E. Neterer, 23. was cited by county officers Saturday, for driving with no registration plate, following a car-truck crash in Elkhart county. Driver of the other vehicle was Donna Ax, 61. r 4 Syracuse, who was westbound on CR 42 east of CR 37 when her auto crossed the centerline crashing into the oncoming GMC truck at 12:16 a.m.

Clem Lisor was disqualified in the finals after qualifying in ninth place in the 100 breaststroke. The 400 freestyle relay team, composed of Dan Dieterly, Doug Rater, Clem Lisa and Gary Webb, placed eighth with a time of 4:07.928. The Warriors finished their season with a 6-6 dual meet record.
