Warriors scare Zebras, lose 67-63 Friday nite
By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee Warriors dropped to Rochester last Friday. 67-63, but not before they gave the undefeated Zebras a real scare. The Warriors had their work cut out for them — especially Dave Hamilton. Dave seemed to be determined to Out jump Rochester’s center, Nel Bemenderfer, who is 6-10. Bob Heady’s Warriors held their biggest lead of the evening against the tough Zebras early in the first quarter, they led 6-2. Rochester really started to move and by the end of the quarter was leading, 19-14. The second period didn’t look bright for Wawasee as Jim Stout took the bench with three fouls and 6:13 remaining in the half. However, the Warriors got moving and notched 18 points. They pulled to within one point of Rochester on several occasions, and they were still down by one at the half. 33-32. The Warriors had several opportunities early in the second half to recapture a lead over the Zebras but were unable to capitalize on any of them. Rochester got several cuick shots at the end of the period to lead, 5347. Wawasee got its break in the final stanza when Bemenderfer contracted his fourth foul with 6:50 left in the game. While he was on the bench, the W armors hacked away at the Zebra lead. Finally, on a pair of free throws by Dave Hamilton, the Warriors took the lead. 54-53. Jim Stout gave Wawasee a three point advantage as he gunned in a basket. Bemenderfer was again put into the game. Rochester rallied and upped their score to 80. Tad Chamberlin sank two baskets to tie it up at 60 apiece. However, the Zebras broke loose as time was running out for the Warriors. Wawasee fell to Rochester, 67-63. The win for Rochester makes their record 16-0. Wawasee s record is now 10-6 Wawasee had three players in double figures. Tad Chamberlin and Jim Stout each scored 18 points. Mark Smith hit for 10. Syracuse wins first game in Lakes Area tourney
Syracuse swamped South Whitley 49-22 in their first game of the Lakes Area junior high tourney South Whitley could not compete with the taller, faster Jackets who advanced to meet Pierceton in the second round of the eight team tourney. That game is at 7:45 Wednesday, Feb.

13, at North Webster. Syracuse brought their season record to 12 wins and three losses on the scoring and rebounding of Ken Patton and Rick McKibben who combined for 27 points and eight rebounds. They hit on 12 of 14 shots from the field. Syracuse started slowly but moved ahead in the second quarter on eight points by Patton. A poor night at the foul line kept the Syracuse lead down. Pierceton defeated North Webster 40-28 to earn their chance to upset Syracuse in the next game. Pierceton defeated Syracuse early in the season by one point in overtime. Lon White 2, Tom Kroh 2 Jackson dunks swim team By SANDY GERENCSER Cynthia Peterson's swimmers were defeated by South Bend Jackson last Tuesday, 86-36. Even though the girls lost, two records were set. Deb Doty, who is a freshman, set both oif the records for the team. She swam th 50 freestyle in a time of 30.5 and she swam the 100 freestyle in 1:07.3 Wawasee had three other first place winners Jennifer Longnecker won the so backstroke with a time of 35.6 Joy Becker took the 50 breaststroke in 37.5. The 400 freestyle was won by Julee Staley as she swam it in a time of 5:28 1.

Warriors take the charge out of West Noble, 72-67
By SANDY GERENCSER Bob Heady's Warriors downed West Noble in their second game of a big week end. The Chargers had defeated Wawasee in the North Wood holiday tourney by 12 points, but that was behind them as they started the game. Wawasee got the jump on the Chargers in the first period. They led at its close, 20-12. The second quarter saw the Warriors take a 10 point lead. 3222. but the Chargers came fighting back and narrowed the lead to four at the half, 32-28. West Noble closed the gap in the third quarter; nevertheless. Wawasee began to hustle. The
Hoss Hills Bowmen have annual meeting, election
Hoss Hills Bowmen, Inc., held their annual banquet and election of officers on February 2 in a Mentone restaurant. Fifty-nine members, wives and children enjoyed the evening which was highlighted by Dave Anderson, conservation officer, showing a film on elk in upper Michigan. A major point was established concerning the poaching of deer It brought to the club's attention that fines for illegal deer kills are far too low and are not often enforced by judges as they should be. It was suggested that steps be taken to encourage higher fines and more serious punishment to help protect the Indiana deer population. The A team got off to a slow start with North Wood leading 159 at the end of the first quarter. Wawasee gained one point in the second stanza as the Warriors hit 10 to the Panther’s 9 to trail 24-19 at half time. In the third quarter the Warriors got hot and hit 15 while North Wood scored eight. In the final quarter the Warriors scored seven points while North Wood hit only six. Bauman and Steffen were high with 11 points each for Wawasee Cripe added 10. Kaehr was high for North Wood with 11 points. Box scores for the Warriors follow: Bauman 434, Steffen 343, Cripe 421. Cooper 312. Hamman 101 and Hoover 003 B Team The B team was down the first quarter but came back to score 17 points in the second stanza to take an 11-13 lead into the dressing room. North Wood took command in the second half, however, scoring 19 points in the third quarter and 16 points in the final stanza while Wawasee hit only nine in the third quarter and eight in the final quarter. The A team is now 10-6 for the season while the B team is 10-2. Both teams will be at Wawasee Prep tomorrow (Thursday).
Warriors racked up 20 points in the period to lead the Chargers, 52-44. Jim Stout led the scoring drive with 11 points. The Warriors got their biggest lead in the fourth quarter when they led 66-53. The Chargers really began to move, and they closed the lead to seven. Wawasee won, 72-67. Wawasee had all five of its starters in double figures. Jim Stout was top scorer with 23 points. Greg Fidler netted 14 points while Dave Hamilton had 12 to his credit. Mark Smith and Tad Chamberlin scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Dan Rarick led the Chargers by

Plates to add to record were presented to Ron Harris, Larry Harris, Ralph Gorsuch, Sr., and Steve Albertson. Jerry Taylor was presented two plates — one for elk and one for deer. The big buck trophy was won by Allan Albertson with his first deer. Allan is 14 years old and is a ninth grade student at Warsaw junior high and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Albertson of r 7 Warsaw. The honorary bowman trophy was presented to Billy Cox who is also a 14 year old ninth grader at Warsaw junior high. Billy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cox of 104 Fifth street, Winona Lake. They dealt the Zebras their second loss of the season. The Warriors took an impressive 11-3 lead in the first quarter, but a rally by Rochester tied the score at the close of the period, 11-11. Early in the second quarter the Zebras got a one point lead — their only lead; however Wawasee tallied 14 points to top Rochester at the half. 25-18. Jerry Lambert’s B-team kept building its lead in the third quarter as it dumped in seven baskets to lead, 39-28. The Warriors had their biggest lead of the evening in the final period when they led by fourteen, 47-33. The Zebras added another basket to make the final score 47-35. Ralph Reiff notched 10 points for Wawasee. Del Acton, Steve Troup and Dave Wollman each scored eight points. Larry Allen chipped in five. Craig Sorenson, Dale Ganz, Paul Miller and Chad Singrey each added two. The Warriors have another big week end coming up. They travel to North Wood on February 15 and host Lakeland on February 16.
Warriorettes are clipped by Elkhart By SANDY GERENCSER The Warriorette basketball team, which is coached by Cynthia Peterson, was defeated Monday night by Elkhart Memorial, 33-29. The girls led at the close of the first three periods, but they were outhustled in the final quarter. Wawasee had Elkhart down 4-1 at the end of the first period, and they also led 16-11 at the half. The third quarter saw the Warriorettes leading, 25-20. The girls could only muster four points in the final period as they fell, 33-29. Barb Brouwer was top scorer for the squad as she hit for 12 points. Tammy Schumn swept the boards for seven rebounds. Their next game is February 21 with Warsaw at home at 6:30. Prep tallies one and one In two games over the week end, Wawasee Prep tallied one and one for both varsity and junior varsity action. Prep school hosted the Howe Military players Friday night

Saturday Action Standing at 6-11, Marion Bennett's center, Baien, scored 40 points in the Saturday game at Marion, thus having full control of the ball with a 69-38 win for the host team. Leading scorer again for Prep was Streeter, a senior, who piledup 14 points. The Prep Lakers will see action two times this week end, one with Bishop Dwanger and one with Huntington Catholic.
