AROUND J; • / If you're wondering about the new business Strictly Corvettes, located on West Chicago street, Mike Smith will smilingly tell you. A car enthusiast (like his father. Bud) he does work on strictly corvettes. How's that for an explanation? It’s just a hobby she said as Mrs Oscar (Bpnnie) Bjella. children's librarian at the local library, was asked about several dolls on her desk Fashioned from dish or washing soap bottles, she showed this writer two exquisite ladies with fully styled gowns, dainty face and hands, complete with unquestionably lovely hair styling. To the rescue this past week came local garden club members 5 with a donation toward corn for feeding of the ducks in the channel where many seem to congregate due to open waters _ Maybe more volunteers will come forward with donations or some nice farmer will even offer services for hauling of feed to the location. Seen in the area of the bridge on South Huntington street in Syracuse. Everett Ketering. with help of several neighbors have furnished feed for the birds for a great number of years. Like everything else, prices have gone up. up. up

Winter concert set for Thursday night

The music department of Wawasee high school features its annual winter concert this coming Thursday evening at 7:30. This program is scheduled in the high school auditorium with the concert orchestra, cadet band, concert band, cadet choir, women’s choir and concert choir participating. In addition to the string orchestra. the brass, reed and percussion instruments will be added to the orchestra. The full orchestra will play "Andante and Allegro" by Mozart. "Pavane" 1 by Faure and "Jig-O-Rama." a light folk tune arranged by Matesky. The bands will play individually as organizations. They will also combine in performing "Trumpets of Splendor" by John Cacavas, highlights from Beethoven's Third Symphony, overture "Eroica” arranged by Joseph Skornicke, and “Manhatten Beach March" by John Phillip Sousa. On the popular side the concert band has chosen to do ”A Granite Rock" Anymore volunteers? Speaking of volunteers, many came forward Sunday to help in painting the fire station meeting room A steady eight mounted to 14 at times and Ed Anderson even assisted when the paint supply ran out before completion of the job. Hopefully, if money is available, other improvements can take place in the meeting room in the near future. Along the line of volunteers, seven men of the local fire and first aid department. Robert Houser with Harris funeral home, and county deputy Ron Robinson have started a two night a week, two hour sessions, for a 90 hour course at Huntington in emergency medical training. This training will be a must in the near future as emergency ambulance services are slowly being deleted. Get 425 cash at anytime, seven days a week. 24 hours a day. is what the new Wawasee Village Branch bank is saying this week, with its new money machine. It was nice to chat briefly with Marge Baumgartner, formerly of the Syracuse area and now of Eugene. Ore , last week at of all places, the local laundromat. She was back for a visit with family and returning by air on Sunday. Some two dozen interested persons attended the meeting at Maxwelton last night, sponsored by the local chamber and newly formed Pickwick Place Mer-

by E. Benchriscutto. The three choirs will be featured as individual organizations. They will combine to perform “Amber Glory” from the "Messiah” by Handel. The concert choir will sing “Come, Come Ye Saints” by Robertson. This selection is done by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on nearly all of its local concerts. The choir will also sing “A Great Day”, a spiritual which has been set to an intricate rhythmic arrangement. Miss Mary Anne Palumbo, a student teacher from Grace college, will direct the band cm "Manhatten Beach March” and the women’s choir in “Go Not Far From Me Oh God” by Zingarelli. arranged by Caroldson. Miss Kim Gardner, a student in the women’s choir, will direct that organization m “Little Wheel”, a spiritual arranged by Mrs. Ruth .Artman The public is invited to attend this concert. Tickets will be sold at the door. chants association, • with guest speakers discussing ways to better use their advertising dollars. An informative panel discussion was also held. The street department will have to be commended again this week for quick action and long hours following the two recent snows this past week. Shovels were in action Wednesday clearing the uptown sidewalks, and manpower was used in pushing the heavy drifting Sunday snow from the uptown parking lots. Belated Happy Birthday goes to Forrest Cook this week, as employees surprised him with several big cakes at his place of business on the comer. Lakeland schools resumed as usual Monday following a four and one-half day vacation last week, with a much lower percentage of absenteeism than last week. School was dismissed at midday on Wednesday due to a snow storm and school officials chose to keep schools closed the remainder of the week when the absentee percentage climbed steadily during the week from 18 per cent on Monday to 25 per cent Wednesday, mostly due to the flu. Paul and Ruth Kerlin are back, nicely tanned, following a Hawaiian vacation. One could hardly believe the weather change here in the past several days with a heavy wet snow Sunday combined with strong winds and drifting (following zero weather last week) to a 29 degrees Tuesday sunny high 40*s during the day. Heavy fog was evident this morning with 33 degrees registered at 6:30 and a nice sunny day in store. Break-in at playhouse Value was placed at approximately S3OO by county officers in a break-in and theft at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse at Lake Wawasee last weefend. Taken were three swords and a dagger, property of the Thunder Bay Corporation, and used in productions at the playhouse. Entry was gained by breaking two padlocked doors.
