Syracuse town board okays two day trash pick up
Harold Renner of Renner Sanitation Service at Ligonier was present at the February 5 town board meeting at Syracuse to make a request. Renner's crew is hired by the town for trash hauling and it has become necessary to pick up two days rather than one day. He wanted permission to make this change from the town board He stated that a better job could be done if the town would agree that everything on the west side of town, using Huntington street as the center line, be picked up on Tuesdays each week Everything on the east side of town would be picked up Wednesdays. He’ agreed to take the responsibility of notifying the citizens of the community of the change. He added that the change was especially necessary because of the coming annexation. The request was granted. Renner also asked that businesses be asked to furnish containers for their trash since the city pays for the dumping There is a deplorable rat problem some places. Containers can be purchased or leased from several companies, including Renner's. Renner’s will furnish containers for city property such as the parks, scout cabin area etc., at no cost to the town. Acting chairman Grisamer agreed to talk to Renner about prices to quote to the business people on containers. It was mentioned that persons in new Pickwick block were not always getting trash picked up because the alley is being used for parking and trucks cannot get through At one time it was piled full of snow and on February 5 there was a pile of lumber with nails in the way of the trucks. The merchants in the block have been advised to clean up the alley so the trucks can go through if they want pick up. Other Business Tom Leonard, a realtor and developer, asked if sewage could be extended to the Pleasant Grove area where he has a project. He was reminded that the State Board of Health has told Syracuse that no one else can be added at present. Waco and other areas are also waiting for this service. If and when the system is large enough for it to be practical it will be done. At present the town is trying to reduce the load to the sewage plant and use chemicals to reduce germ count by 2 per cent. Stan Insley was present and thanked the town for removing the box elder trees in his neighborhood. He also brought attention to parking violations on west Carroll street. The board instructed him to notify the police of this matter. It is their duty to enforce law.. Mrs. Larry Clodfelter was appointed to the plan commission as the new Republican member. She is to fulfill the unexpired term left by Donald Niles. Bill Coburn was elected president of the Board of Zoning Appeal by his peers and was given approval by the board. Grisamer agreed to contact the'state about Federal funds which are available to towns on a 9-10 per cent basis if they apply and are approved before funds are gone and a July deadline Syracuse could use
more of these funds for streets among other things. John Walker of First Charter Insurance was instructed to go ahead and renew policies for town equipment and property by the February 11 date when it is due. An updated list of equipment is to be used to be sure everything is covered. 6 In addition to Grisamer. town board members Carl Myrick and Marion L. Miller were present along with clerk-treasurer Betty Dust, town engineer Ben Wilson, attorney Steven Hearn, a dozen interested citizens and three guests were also in attendance.
