Also, milk there this week hit a high of 5i.72 a gallon. The tradition originated some 9(Fyears ago in Pennsylvania and some say the switch to daylight saving time at this time of the year might have affected the situation this year. With the bitter cbld and snow Hurries Monday and Tuesday, one wonders if we are being hit with a winter cold blast or will a mild six weeks of winter be coming soon. Friends here will wellremember the talents of former Syracusean Joel Burkholder, son 'of the Bob Burkholders, on the organ. Joel, a sophomore music/ medieval history major and physical education major at Carthage college in Wisconsin, was a top organist in a divisional contest recently sponsored by the Milwaukee chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Most interesting should be the promotional meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening, 7 o’clock, at Maxwelton Golf club, for all area merchants and interested persons of the community whereby a number of guest speakers will be on hand to answer and assist sales promotional ideas. One race in the May primary has been assured this past week with two filings for the position of Turkey Creek township assessor. Joseph Gray announced his candidacy last week when he filed for the position and present assessor. Harry VanHemert said Tuesday he will be in the running having also filed for the post. Then again, unofficially, rumor has it Marion (Doc) Miller may be a candidate on the Democratic ballot for the assessor's post. VanHemert has held the assessor position since his appointment in June of 1972 when a census report revealed a township population of over 5,000 residents. The Shriners are to be commended again as 108 young people in the Syracuse third grade and special education classes here joined the 1,700 county third graders in a trip to the coliseum at Fort Wayne Friday for the Shrine circus. Comes word this week of another of our senior citizens celebrating a 94th birthday, and we are only a day late in wishing a happy one to Adda Martin. Born at Hills Corners, Mich., in 1880, she was married to Earl Martin, now deceased, in 1897 and traveled extensively with her husband. A resident of Lake Wawasee for 23 years and Syracuse for the past 41 years, she has lived at New Carlisle and Markle, also. Her husband was formerly associated in the creamy butter business, including locations, at New Paris and Middlebury. Mrs. Martin, a genuine lovely lady, loves to knit and gives many of her knitted items as gifts. Quiet for several months has been the Wings Over Wawasee group at Syracuse but watch for improvements at the airport in

Comes word this week of several local men planning to run for offices at Turkey Creek, one for trustee and one for township assessor. Seems a race may be forthcoming. The weather here just before press time has not become much better from yesterday’s 20 degree temperatures and bitter winds, and many area schools were being closed due to the storm. Temperatures hovered around the 20 degree mark this morning with high winds continuing causing drifting of the heavyblizzard type snow.
Called for are 5 to 7 inches of snow and freezing rain before night time with 40 mph winds continuing through Friday. At this point, basking in the sun sounds delightful.
