Warriors massacre Jimmies 82-62

By SANDY GERENCSER Bob Heady's Warriors outhustled the Jimtown Jimmies Friday night at Wawasee to defeat them 82-62 The Warriors started out with a bang and jumped out front before Jimtown could score They led 2117 at the end of the first quarter. In the second period. Tad Chamberlin and Jim Stout combined for 15 points to lead Wawasee's attack With :55 left in the half, Coach Heady contracted a technical foul for vehemently disagreeing with a foul called by one of the referees. To the delight of the Wawasee fans, the shot was missed. The Warriors left for the locker room with a 16 point lead. 46-30 The second half saw Wawasee storming over the Jimmies, who just couldn't get a substantial scoring drive going. The Warriors led by as many as 29 points in the third quarter They held the lead at the end of the period. 70-43. Wawasee simply wrapped up the game in the fourth quarter, 82-62 Jim Stout was high scorer for the Warriors with 19 points Three other players hit double figures They were Tad Chamberlin with 15. 0. J. Simpson named 1973 King of Sports

Professional football’s running back O. J. Simpson, who last year rushed for a single season record of 2,003 yards, has been selected for the 1973 King of Sports Award, it was jointly announced today by Chris Schenkel, head of the International Palace* of Sports foundation and by Dr. William M. Eagles, Richmond, Va., president of Kiwanis International. Both organizations are co-sponsors of a King of Sports Youth Career awards program which the selection dramatizes The choice was made by a nationwide poll of the members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, which Schenkel also heads. Simpson received 753 out of 1.868 votes cast, to out distance Hank Aaron, slugging outfielder of the Atlanta Braves, who was runner-up with 305. UCLA’s basketball star. Bill Walton, was third with 127; golfer. Jack Nicklaus. fourth with 97. and UCLA coach, John Wooden, fifth with 72. Wonderhorse, Secretariat, polled 10. The award, a gold commemorative medallion in the recipient’s likeness, is presented to the most outstanding competitor of the year in any sport whose likeness on a commemorative medallion would be most cherished by both donors to and by recipients of youth career awards granted under the program. Wawasee battled to a 10-10 tie at the end of the first quarter; but they came around in the second period to lead at the half. 27-13. The girls led 35-23 at the close of the third quarter; they Ice boat Regatta set for Feb. 2 A number of racing sailors are getting together on February 2 for a rather unique sporting event for the Lakeland area. They are having an ice boat regatta. All types of ice boats will be welcome, especially skimmer 45's. ,A trophy will be given to the winner The races will begin about 10 a m. with the exact location on Lake Wawasee to be decided upon that morning. Unfortunately for Wawasee. several regular swimmers were out of action due to illness. Three girls set records for Wawasee. Marlys Staley set a record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:09.8. Jennifer Longenecker swam 34.8 to set a record in the 50 backstroke; Deb Doty swam the 100 backstroke in a record time of 1:16.5. Winning firsts for Wawasee were Julee Staley in the 200 and 400 freestyle. Joy Becker in the 100 breaststroke and Deb Doty in the 100 backstroke. The 400 freestyle relay team — Marlys Staley. Jennifer Longenecker, Deb Doty and Julee Staley — took first place they are undefeated The 200 medley relay team also placed first. The team is composed of Julie Thibaut. In the championship game Wawasee won a close victory over North Wood, 42-39. Winners of the morning session were North Wood over Whitko, 46-41, and Wawasee over West Noble. 42-32. The Wawasee Warrior freshman basketball team won the freshman tourney held at West Noble last Saturday by defeating the host West Noble Charger team in the morning and the North Wood Panthers during the afternoon session. The score of the final game was 42-39 with the Warriors scoring 12 points the first quarter to Northwood's 11. In the second quarter the Panthers' outscored the Warriors by hitting 15 while Wawasee hit for eight points making a half time score of 26-20 in favor of North Wood. Freshman . coach George Vitaniemi must have said the right words at half-time because the Warriors outscored the Panthers 9-7 in the third quarter and 13-6 the fourth quarter to take the championship.
