Warriors stumble to Knights 74 to 66

By SANDY GERENCSER Bob Heady's Warriors lost to the East Noble Knights last Friday, after leading them by a margin of 10 points in the third period The game started out sluggishly, with several minutes elapsing before there was even a score; East Noble got the basket. After that both teams opened up and started moving. The first quarter was close with the lead passing back and forth; but East Noble had the edge at the end. 1716 The second quarter saw the Warriors on target as they outhustled the Knights Mark Smith and Dave Hamilton led the attack £S they combined for 15 points. Wawasee hit 66 per cent of its shots to lead at the half. 39-34 The second half found Heady ’s squad pulling away from the Knights With 3:54 left in the third quarter, they led by 10 points. 4838 East Noble really began to fight back; they closed the margin to four at the end of th® penod. 52-48 The Knights carried their momentum into the fourth quarter* to take the lead. Wawasee seems to have a lot of trouble keeping its drive going in the final stanza, and Friday was no exception They fell, 74-66. The loss now makes their season record 8-5. Wawasee was without its leading scorer Jim Stout; but Mark Smith, a junior, turned in a excellent performance to help make up for his absence. Mark led the Warriors with 19 points; he hit 100 per cent on nine free throws. Others in double figures for Wawasee were Tad Chamberlin and Greg Fidler with 17 and 13 points respectively. East Noble was led by Don Fee, who banged in 22 points: Also in double figures were Stan Kostielney with 17. Dennis Donat, 14, and John McGinn, 11. Wrestlers place second in tourney

By SANDY GERENCSER Terry Frank's wrestler! scored 92 points to win second place in the Goshen tourney on Saturday. Jan. 19. North Wood took first with 974 poirits. Other schools in the tournament were Goshen. Fairfield. Fort Wayne North, Lakeland. Jimtowh and Concord. Wawasee had four champions in the tourney. They were Alex Labra. Joe Melendez. Dave Schopf and Mitch Ousley. Alex won the 121 pound class by decisioning Slaback (F), 10-0. Miller (L), 5-0. and Hahn (NW). 2-0. Joe decisioned Johnson (J), 16-0, Kocks (NS). 8-2. and Holderread (G). 2-1. to win the 140 pound class. Dave decisioned his three opponents to take the 147 pound class. He beat North (NS). 2-1, Fearnow (J). 7-6. and Mishler (NW), 5-3. Mitch won top honors in the heavyweight class by pinning Beovick (C) in 1:16. defeating Mickel (NW) bydefault. and pinning Stahley (F) in 1:40 Wrestlers placing second were Steve Hpopingamer in the 100 pound class and Doug Brown in the 157. Steve decisioned Ryan (NS). 1-0, and Burrington (J). 6-2, to get to the finals. He was pinned in the championship match byBricker in 2:34. Doug decisioned Strayei (L>, 10-8. and Rowe (G). 8-4. He was decisioned, 4-0, by Campbell (J) in the final match. Vic Labra and Mike Wollman picked up third place honors for the Warriors. Vic was defeated by Strang in the 114 pound class in an overtime. 6-2. He decisioned McDonald (NS), 4-3, and Wainwright (L). 5-0, to win Syracuse divides victories with Kendallville Dave Stoffel scored a season high of 25 points to lead the Syracuse seventh grade basketball team to a 40-28 win over Kendallville. Stoffel hit 11 of 17 shots and added 15 rebounds to his best game of the year. His 10 points in the third quarter pulled Syracuse from behind to a lead they never lost. The Yellow Jacket eighth grade team fell behind 11-0 at the start of their game and could not make up the margin as they 52-40. Bryan Smith scored 18 points and several assists and Ken Pattort pulled down nine rebounds but the taller undefeated Kendallville team held the advantage throughout the game. Coach Tom Jones' eighth grade team now has six wins and three losses. The third quarter showed the Squires taking a commanding lead of 11 points, 26-15. The Warriors fought to the finish, but just couldn’t come back on them. East Noble defeated Wawasee. 40-25.’ Dave Wollman led the Warners with six points. Ralph Reiff and Steve Troup had five and four points respectively. Jesse Stevens and Gary Francis won fourth place in the 134 and 179 pound classes, respectively. pinned Serieno (C) in 4:50. He was decisioned in the semi-finals by Golden (NW). 9-0. He pinned Hunt (J) in 2:57 in the first half of the consolation, but was decisioned by Beachy (G) in the second half. 7-1. Gary pinned Leinbach (F> in 4:09; however, he was pinned by Boyle (L) in the semi-finals. He came back to pin Silver (C) in 2:10; he was decisioned by Bigler. 4-2, in the second stanza of the consolation round. The Warriors will travel to Manchester on January 24. The meet will begin at 6:30.

Freshmen score four victories

The Wawasee Warrior freshman basketball teams each scored two victories in games played during the past week. At Concord the A team won 4746 while the B team won 38-37 in two very close battles. At Whitko the A team won 35-33 and the B team walked off wiQi a 48-35 victory. At Concord Cripe was the leading scorer for Wawasee when the Warriors traveled to Concord* to meet the Minutemen. He scored 16 points on six field goals and four foul shots. Bauman added an additional 10 to the Warriors' score. Lovejoy was high point man for Concord with 11 points. Vanlaningham 203, Grove 102 and Snowmobilers hold January meeting The meeting of the Wawasee Snowmobile club was January 15 at the Frog Annex at which time a welcome was given new members. President Dave Heckaman reported that additional speed limit signs have been posted in several areas. Results of the recent snowmobile event at the city park were announced with a discussion of the point system to be used. A family fun snowmobile event is scheduled for January 27 in front of Wawasee Prep school at Lake vlawasee at 1 o'clock in tjie afternoon. Melt Day, in the event the ice is unsafe, will be February 3. The public is invited to attend this fun afternoon. The next regularly scheduled dub meeting is February 5.

# L quarter which pulled Syracuse from a five point lead to a 43-22 margin. The most exciting game of the tourney occurred in the consolation contest between North Webster and Milford. The teams exchanged baskets throughout as Steve Yoder scored 19 points for Milford and Kent Trobaugh countered witlk 18 for North Webster. Phil Stichter added 12 points for Milford. Central Noble defeated Milford in the other morning contest. Milford led throughout the first half but coach Bob Long’s Trojans 'could not hit the basket in the secqpd half. Next Saturday, Jan. 26, Syracuse will host the seventh grade teams in a tourney. Syracuse will play Webster at 9 am with Milford meeting the favored Central Noble team at 10:15. The afternoon session will begin at 1:30 p.m.
