Wrestlers upset Chargers 30-21
By SANDY GERENCSER Terry Franks Warrior wrestling team defeated a tough West Noble squad that was previously undefeated. Wawasee "picked up two pins, two decisions and two forfeits for the win. Wawasee lost the first match, but picked up the next three. Dave Doll decisioned his opponent 5-0 in the second match. Vic and Alex Labra each won their match by a forfeit to put the Warriors ahead 15-3. West Noble got decisions on the next three matches though, and made the score 15-12. Dave Schopf got the Warrior’s first pin after downing Reynolds in 5:19. Schopf out-muscled his opponent and had him down 10-0 before he got the pm. The Chargers came back tn the next three’ matches by winning all of them by a decision and, in doing so. tied the score. 21-21. Mike Woilman gave Wawasee the edge as he decisioned his opponent 4-1. Mitch Ousley clinched the win for the Warriors in the crucial heavyweight match by pinning his adversary in 1:48. The pin helped the Warriors wrap it up, 30-21. 98 pound — Steve Hoopingamer. They won two matches by decision and lost two. They got seven forfeits. In the 126 pound class, Ron Beer (W) was decisioned by Beers (WN), 6-5. In the 132, Ken Hammon (W) decisioned Lynch (WN), 4-2. Randy Rinker (W) won the 167 by decisioning Frye (WN), 6-4. West Noble took the 177 as Galloway decisioned Lovellette (W), 8-1. First aid run made The Syracuse first aid unit responded to a call Friday at 8:39 a m \t Syracuse Enterprises Mrs. Mabie Stouder of Syracuse, an employee, passed out while at work and was taken to the office of a local physician far treatment.
JV scalps Squires By SANDY GERENCSER Jerry Lambert’s JV squad brought home another big victory Friday as they defeated the Manchester Squires. The Warriors seemed to have control of the game as they led at the close of each quarter. The Warriors and the Squires looked as if they would be pretty evenly matched, but Wawasee got the first period lead. 8-7. The Warriors kept their drive going in the second quarter. They built their lead to four as they led at the half, 18-14. The second half found the Warriors in control as they scored ten points and held the Squires to four. The Warriors led 28-18. The fourth quarter was the finale for the JV team. They chalked up an impressive 20 points to defeat Manchester. 4833 Paul Miller and Ralph Reiff led the scoring for Wawasee with nine points apiece. Craig Sorensen netted six points, all in the last quarter. The Warriors will battle the Plymouth Pilgrims on January 11 at Wawasee. Freshmen split Northridge games The Warrior freshman A team lost to Northridge last evening (Tuesday) while the B team continued in its winning ways with its fifth victory. The A team lost 46-34. Cripe was high man for the Warriors with 12 points. Graber led Northridge with 13. Mike Steffen was the leading rebounder with seven. Simmons sets swim record By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee swimmers lost their first regular season meet Tuesday night to a fine Elkhart Memorial Team. 104-63. Tom Rankin's Warriors vere only able to capture first place in two events, but set a new varsity record with a second place winner. Joe Elam won the one meter diving with 165 points. The breaststroke was won by Clem Lisor with a time of 1:11.2. Brian Simmons set a new varsity record in the SOOifreestyle with 5:42.2. Although he set a newvarsity record, he was awarded second place after a close race decided by the judge.
Warriors squeak past Manchester 57-56
By SANDY GERENCSER Bob Heady’s Warriors pulled out a close one against the Manchester Squires last Friday. The Warriors squandered an early first quarter lead and were contained by Manchester until the final 18 seconds of the game when Tad Chamberlin sank a shot to give Wawasee the edge, 57-56. The Warriors got the jump on the Squires in the first quarter and led by six points, but Manchester began its rally and in the closing seconds took the lead, 1312. with a quick shot by Dean Wendel. Both teams seemed to start out slow, but the second quarter found the two teams banging in points. The Warriors displayed some fancy ball handling as they made impossible passes from one team member to another. Jim
Warsaw will be site for 1974 sectional
The Warsaw Community high school gym will be the site of the 1974 sectional tournament. Said tourney will be held on February 28 and March 1 and 2. Participating in the Warsaw sectional will be the following teams: Akron Mentone Rochester Triton Warsaw Wawasee The winner of the tournament will advance to one of 16 regionals. Stout of Wawasee and Dave Clark of Manchester both had good scoring in the quarter as they each bagged 10 points. The Squires had the lead at the half. 34-29. The Warriors had some trouble getting their drive going in the second half and the Squires ran their lead up to eight points. 41-33. Wawasee hustled and before the period was ended had cut the Manchester lead in half, 44-41. Unfortunately Jim Stout was lost in the =quarter far throwing a punch. The fourth quarter was really the big one as Wawasee pulled within one pant several times, but just couldn’t get the lead. The winner from the Elkhart Central regional will advance to the Fort Wayne semi-state with winners from Fort Wayne, Anderson and Marion. The finals will be played on March 23 at the Indiana university field house in Bloomington giving the 64th annual Indiana High School Athletic Association championship. J Gronendyke 163 Warnorettes beat Bremen By SANDY GERENCSER The Warriorette Basketball teams, coached by Cynthia Peterson, defeated Bremen in both the varsity and junior varsity games Monday night. The JV squad won 32-15. They led at the end of the first quarter, 6-5.; and built their lead to four points to lead at the half, 13-9. They scored nine points in the third period and held Bremen to 3, to lead 22-12; then wrapped the game up in the fourth quarter, 3215. High scorer for the B-team was Toni Gronendyke with 10 points. Killie White was top rebounder with six and second high scorer with eight points. The varsity team also defeated Bremen, 47-30. They were down 58 at the end of the first period, but came back in the second quarter to score 18 points and hold Bremen to six. The Warriorettes led at the half 23-14. They had Bremen down 37-20 at the end of the third quarter and won the game, 47-30. Colleen Beer led varsity scoring with 20 points. Betsy Williams was second high with 15. The rebound department was led by Tammy Schumn with 14. The Warriorettes’ next game is a home game against Goshen on January 14 at 6:30. Charles L. Pryor, vice president of the package store. WRC meets on Monday night Mrs. Lee Poyser of Syracuse was hostess for the Monday night meeting of the John C. Adams chapter 278, Women’s Relief Corps. President Mrs. Georgia Buster opened the meeting in regular form and heard various reports. A letter of thanks was read from two local patients at nursing homes and a card signed for an ill member. A report was also given on a chapter project and another project of a quilt was displayed.
