THE M-J office is in receipt of a unique holiday gift from Mr. and Mrs. Chris Schenkel, perhaps the most celebrated Lakeland citizens. Their thoughtfulness has touched their co-workers in the Fourth Estate. The gift is a beautiful Della Robbia Wreath, made by the boys of Boys Republic, Chino, Calif., a 66-year old institution to help boys with unsatisfactory or nonexistent home life. At the present time there are about 180 boys at Boys Republic, ages 14 to 18 years. The wreath is patterned after the 15th century ceramic decoration originated by the Della Robbia family in Florence, Italy. It is fashioned from California redwood foliage and a wide variety of seed-pods, cones and colorful fruit gathered by boys on Saturday field trips throughout the year. Due to the creative nature of hand production, no two wreaths are exactly alike. In addition to the fragrant redwood foliage, other materials used in the wreath are lotus pods, pine cones, Italian cypress, teasel, jacarando, screw beans, apples, lemons, flowering eucalyptus, liquid amber, cotton burrs and bottle tree pods. The folks at The M-J are

grateful to Chris and Fran for their thoughtfulness, and wish them a Merry Christmas, and to thank them for making their lives a part of our community. NOBLE HOLDERREAD, a sportsman and humorist, had this comment at Augsburger’s Coffee Shop: “South Bend has the Notre Dame football team, and Milford has the Hickory Bares.” ■ -**• FOR THOSE of you who have not had the opportunity to meet our new librarian Miss Carolyn E. Grove we would like to suggest you take a minute or two to stop by the library and get acquainted. Miss Grove, who is in Milford now on a part-time basis, will be taking over as Our Town’s librarian as of December 31 when Mrs. Charles Kerlin retires. Miss Grove comes to Milford from Bristol. REMEMBERING BIRTHDAYS can be a big problem, especially if your mother’s birth-
day is on December 13 and your mother-in-law was born on December 14. That’s a problem that Mrs. Ronald (Gloria) Baumgartner has had for the past several years but will have no more. When Gloria’s mother, Mrs. R. E. (Sarah) Slabaugh applied for a birth certificate which she needed prior to leaving the States for a recent visit to several Central American countries she found she was born on December 14 not December 13 as she had thought for the past several years. Now daughter Gloria has it easy but the others in the family might have a slight problem remembering just when their mother’s birthday really is. THE TELEPHONE at the Russ Homan residence on Waubee Lake hasn’t stopped ringing lately since many people have been calling to question Homan and Elsie Bontrager about Elsie’s sister Edith. Edith came down with nolio

when she was years old. It left her in her present condition. Edith has had various operations and surgeries throughout her life. Ever since her last surgery —a Harrington rod operation — about 11 years ago, she has been having occasional leg pains which have been increasing with time. She had an appointment with the Mayo Clinic to find out the cause of the pain. When they performed surgery, they found that part of the rod in her back was rubbing on her lower spine, causing friction and thus causing the pain in her leg. The surgery was a success. However, a week later when they put her in a body cast, she started bleeding internally. The doctors were forced into a second operation to terminate the bleeding. She is now recuperating in the Saint Mary’s hospital in
Rochester, Minn., and is once again in the body cast. It is not known when Edith will be brought back to a hospital closer home for the remainder of her convalescense. She will be in her cast for three to six months. OVER MENTONE way Miss Sue Ellen Mabie, a senior at MHS, has been named the winner of the Good Citizen contest sponsored by Anthony Nigo chapter, DAR. Sue Ellen is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Geiger of Our Town. She is the daughter of Mrs. Max (Alice) Kleinknight of r 5 Warsaw and Art Mabie of Syracuse. ON THE front page of last week’s M-J we ran a photo showing Mrs. Wayne Houser of Cromwell shaking hands with Mrs. Richard Nixon at the White House. We stated the second woman in the photo was Mary Boyer of Fort Wayne, sister of
Mrs. Richard (Betty) Smith of Our Town. What we did not mention because we did not know was that Mrs. Houser is the sister of Leon Newman, also of Our Town. MILFORD’S TOWN board president Dr. T. A. Miller was off Monday with Chris Schenkel to attend the Liberty Bowl. SAM AND MARK Baumgartner, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Baumgartner of near Our Town, were honored Monday at the annual Christmas party for Goshen News carriers. The two were among six chosen to receive special honors. Mark, 13, and Sam, 14, have been carriers for three years and have 102 customers in this area. Each received a trophy and plaque. HAVE A Merry Christmas . . .
