Syracuse population stands at 2,059
The official population of the town (rs Syracuse, based on an April 1, 1970 census, is 2,059, according to Syracuse town attorney Robert Reed. He made the announcement at a town board meeting at town hall last night, stating the figure was released by the census bureau of the secretary of state’s office, and includes residents in the February 25,1970 annexation. Clerk-treasurer Betty Dust said prior to annexation the town’s population stood at 1,536. Meeting Delayed The meeting was delayed from 7:30 to 8:30 due to lack of a quorum. When member Marion Miller arrived, the board took up its agenda of business. Officer Dale Sparklin told the board he had checked out a complaint of the previous meeting concerning a parking problem at the corner of Dolan Drive and West Main street, and recommended the elimination of one parking space, not two as requested, to alleviate the traffic hazard. He was instructed to get the necessary information to attorney Reed that an ordinance can be drawn up. The second area of complaint was-at the corner of Henry and Huntington streets, and officer said he had spoken to those parking close to that corner, and that the traffic hazard there has been eliminated. Wants F unds Pro-Rated Fire chief Joe Hughes spoke out in favor of pro-rating fire department funds among existing firemen. He said two members had died (Jerry Kern and Bill Betes) and that firemen felt their monies should be prorated among the other members. Hughes said firemen who had failed to meet ordinance qualifications of attending fifty per cent of the fires and fire drills should not be docked. Clerk-treasurer Dust said she stood by the ordinance, and that if in previous years firemen had \ been paid in spite of the fact that they had not attended fifty per cent of the fires and drills, this was not her concern. She had the ordinance and read the portion that concerned reimbursement. Attorney Reed Milford buys new truck chassis McCormick Motors, Inc., Nappanee, was the successful bidder last night in the town of Milford’s purchase of a new 1974 truck chassis for the Milford fire department’s tanker. The Chevrolet C-500 series will replace a 1960 International chassis. Bid price of the successful firm was $7,125.87. C. S. Myers Ford, Milford and Syracuse, entered a bid of $8,998.75. There were two other bidders who failed to meet qualifications, according to Milford fire chief Harold Kaiser. Delivery of the new unit will be from 90 to 120 days. Besides chief Kaiser and his assistant chief, Bill Leemon, * those present at bid opening at the fire station were Van Buren township trustee Maurice Beer and advisory board members Merril Rink and Harold Young. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Custer of Rankin, 111., were Thursday night guests in the home of Mrs. Lillian Custer at Leesburg. They were in the area to attend the funeral of Myrtus Custer of near Pierceton.

said anyone filing a claim for reimbursement who did not meet the ordinance would be guilty of filing a false claim and would be subject to prosecution. Chief Hughes said this practice would demoralize the fire department, and board member Darrel Grisamer said the ordinance had stood the town in good stead in the past and that |re felt it should not be changed. Salary Ordinance Attorney Reed read the town’s new salary ordinance and it was passed, granting raises in most departments. Mr. Hughes questioned the increase of town board members from S2OO to SSOO per year, and was told by Mrs. Dust that the board had not had a raise in a number of years, whereas town employees had received repeated raises. Attorney Reed also read an ordinance to transfer funds (7327) and an ordinance to consolidate funds of several departments (73-28), which were approved. Board member Miller was authorized to purchase a back hoe from New Paris Tractor Sales to go with the tractor recently purchased from that firm. Fire chief Hughes and police chief Orville Vanderßeyden were asked to submit equipment lists to the board that such items could be purchased as year-end funds allow. It was noted that the manhole at the corner of West Carrol street, brought to the attention of the board by townsman Stanley Insley at the last meeting, at one time emptied in the mill race, but now has no outlet. This will be remedied as street improvements progress, member Grisamer said. Attorney Reed advised the board to provide approximately $5,000 at some future point to make an infiltration study as outlined by the Stream Pollution Control Board in a letter he had in hand. The board approved Larry Weaver as Syracuse fire chief for the coming year, as voted by his fellow firemen. Gary Webb, speaking for the Wawasee Hard Water Run

Snowmobile club, asked that the group be allowed to use the town’s rest room facilities at city park, the matter being referred to Dale Sparklin, president of the park board. Police were asked to make a partial patrol of the newly annexed areas, but to attempt to keep their milage the same as in 1973. The board's next meeting will be January 15.
