The Syracuse fire department has awarded a contract to Lakeland Motors for a new truck to fight brush and grass fires. Cost: $3,377.39. Omicrons to go Christmas caroling During the Thursday meeting of the Kappa Omicron chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in the home of Mrs. Dennis Bjella, it was decided to select a Christmas caroling night for shut-ins of the community. Fruit and cookie baskets will ah® be provided. Members responded to roll call by suggesting what each would like for Christmas. The Christmas party for chapter members and husbands will be at 8 p.m. on December 8 in the home of Mrs. David Johnson. Mrs. Carl Fieel presented the evening program on coordinating colors in the home. Refreshments were served by Mrs. James Berkey. The next regular chapter meeting will be in the Johnson home on December 13. U.N. GRANT On Nov. 24.1972, the United Nations granted permanent observer status to East Germany.

At their recent annual council meeting the Indiana Lakeland Girl Scout council elected members to their board of directors. The following people are now members of the council’s board of directors. President — Mrs. Ford Nixon, Elkhart First vice president — Mrs. Roland Kruger, Kendallville Second vice president — Mrs. Bruce Mitterling, Warsaw Secretary — Mrs. Richard Wolferman, Dewart Lake Treasurer — John Scheets, Elkhart Also elected were: Mrs. Robert Skillen, Syracuse; Dr. Claude Gunter, Elkhart; Robert Pfaff, Elkhart; Mrs. Donald Hooker, I CUSTOMER RELATIONS AWARD — The October customer relations award from the United Telephone Company of Indiana, Inc., went to James Scott of r 1 Leesburg. Scott was driving the company van on state road 13 south of North Webster on October 18 when he saw a girl dart out in front of an approaching auto. She was struck and knocked to the pavement. Scott pulled his van across the highway to block the on-coming traffic, using the truck’s flashers and safety cones. He covered the girl with his raincoat and calmed the woman driving the auto. After a two-day stay at the hospital, the girl was released. For his unselfish deed, Scott was awarded a $25 US Savings Bond and his company’s award of merit. Hittite city remains unearthed in Turkey f A French archaeologist says he has discovered the remains of the ancient Hittite city of Tarbunza, “city of the storm god,” in southern Turkey. Prof. Emmanuel Laroche of the French Archaeological Institute in Istanbul, says the city, discovered during excavations at Meydancik Castle, near the Mediterranean port of Silifke, dates back to 1300 B.C. - CNS

A large doorway has been opened between the two stores to make easy access from one store to the other. Mr. Moore said he would continue to be assisted in The Star Store by his daughter, Mrs. Steve (Linda) Crow, and Mrs. Olen (Opal) Keim.
