Warriors defeat Chargers 68-65 season opener

By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee Warriors, under the coaching of Bob Heady, captured their first win in their opener against Carroll of Allen county with a 68-65 victory at Wawasee Saturday night. The Warrior fan support was tremendous as they continued the tradition of drowning out the announcer as he announced the starting five for Wawasee. Dave Madrick, the 6-foot-3 center was the only junior to start on the squad as the senior forwards and guards led the Warrior attack. The seniors were Jim Stout, Tad Chamberlin, Dave Hamilton and Greg Fidler. The Warriors came on strong as they leaped to a 21-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The sharp shooting of the Warriors increased their lead to 26-10 in the first few minutes of the second quarter. The Warriors enjoyed their biggest lead of the evening only briefly as the 16 point lead was short-lived. The Carroll Chargers came charging back in the second quarter, despite a slight height disadvantage, to close the gap to two points with a 34-32 half-time score. The second half found the Warriors fighting to keep their lead. Despite the fact the scoring was close and an unusual amount of fouls occurred, the Warriors hung on to their lead during the whole period to enter the fourth quarter with a score of 49-45. The last quarter was a hectic one for both teams with each wanting to capture a safe lead but neither could. The new foul board at Wawasee began to light up like a Christmas tree as the fouls of both teams began to add up. With just under seven minutes left in the game the board showed five players, four Chargers and (Hie Warrior, in foul trouble. As the clock ticked on, the fouls took their toll. Dave Hamilton of Wawasee, who fouled out with about six and a half minutes left was missed by the team as the quarter wore on. However, he was soon followed by three Chargers and another Warrior, Dave Madrick. With about 30 seconds left in the game a technical foul was called against Jim Stout of Wawasee, but to the dismay of the Charger fans the easy point was missed. With but three seconds left, Carroll’s high point man, Rick Faylor, fouled out and the Warriors left the floor triumphant, 68-65. Seniors Jim Stout and Tad Chamberlin led the Warrior scoring with a combined score of 40 points. Stout totaled up 22 points and Chamberlin had 18. Scoring for the Chargers were Rick Faylor with 22 points, Rick Warner 17 and Dennis McComb 16. The win was an excellent start for the Warrior basketball season with their new coach, Bob Heady, who made his debut Saturday night. The Warriors go up against Columbia City Friday at Wawasee. By SANDY GERENCSER The JWawasee Warriors defeatexithe Fairfield Falcons in atkexcitipg game Tuesday night at Fairfield by a score of 83-62. The game was a fast moving one for both teams. Although the game was fast, there were not many fouls in the first half. The Warriors, who won their game against Carroll on foul shots, didn’t get any foul shots until the second half. They then made three out of seven. Wawasee hit 40 out of 67 shots from the field for approximately 60 per cent. The

SWIM CLUB FORMING SOON Wawasee swim club is forming soon. It is a competitive swim team for all students between first and eighth, grade. Q. Fann PURDUE 28 — INDIANA 23 and the end of Lee Corso’s first year coaching at I.U. but this a.m. he is on the 1974 season. Nothing like hard work in sports. He is attacking it with the same fire he gave all season. We are disappointed but I like the way the kids kept fighting. The last three weeks were three of the most exciting games you can imagine and a little more “breaks” on close ones by refs and we could have been winning but we really did it to ourselves. It doesn’t make any difference now whether or not Bobrowski was stopped short of the touchdown or the ref out of position called it — those guys have a hard job and things happen fast. It is easier to referee from the stands. The players on the field for us were young and let things get away but 1974 is another season. They will grow, get stronger (weight programs etc.) and by remembering will gain experience. I saw only a few seniors whose loss will hurt and a lot of replacements coming up. My sympathy to Trent Smock whose fumble hurt but he is a great athlete and will pace us the next two years. It is guys like Trent Smock, Donnie Thomas, Steve Sanders, Courtney Snyder, David Knowles Mike Winslow. Mike Eikenberry, and many other freshmen and sophomores who can take us to the Rose Bowl. All of these have two years (as do many others) and that plus two years of Corso recruiting could help. The other chief ingredient is the work of the alumns. It isn’t this season that tells the tale on Lee Corso as a coach but the work on the road and I think he has it in
