SAE receives check from LCEA for state and national dues
The executive committee of the Lakeland Community Educators Association has presented the Wawasee chapter of SAE — Student Action for Education — with a check for $25 to cover SAE’s national and state dues for the 1973-74 school year. Keith Bowman, president of the Lakeland Community Educators Association, presented the check to SAE president Becky Replogle and vice president Roz Long. In presenting the check, Bowman commented, “We hope this token expresses to some extent our faith in education and these young people who by actions and deeds have committed themselves to the profession of teaching. We wish them well in their future endeavors.” In accepting the gift, Miss Replogle said, “This is great. It makes us feel good that the LCEA is interested in us and it encourages us to work even a little harder to be the best SAE chapter possible.” LCEA decided to pay SAE’s dues as 1 a gesture of support for the organization which has been very active and which has brought state wide recognition to Wawasee in the state program. LCEA sees the gift as an encouragement* to students to pursue a teaching career, as support to students who are working for the improvement of the educational system, and as recognition of the contributions the club has made to the school program. Wawasee’s SAE chapter has been named the best chapter in the state for two

straight years, has won numerous awards at state for their scrapbooks, and has had many of its members serve the state organization as officers. Among SAE’s many projects are the organization and promotion of the annual SWAP Day at Wawasee, the collection of gifts for mental health patients at Christmas time, the awarding of scholarships to senior members, the promotion of Teaching Careers Week, and the entertaining of the Wawasee faculty at various times of the year. The club also explores the teaching profession through films, rap sessions with the teachers, observation days, and exchange days with other area SAE chapters. Terry Iden, sponsor of the SAE chapter, said, “This gift makes the students feel the teachers are backing them and are appreciative of the work they’re doing. SAE is an extension of the classroom and gives the students a chance to get involved in their future profession and learn some things about it before they get to college. Our present curriculum does not offer this opportunity. We’re grateful to the LCEA for the gift.” LAKELAND LOCAL Mrs. F. J.
