New Wawasee 4iigh school basketball coach Bob Heady has a tough act to follow! With the closing of a highly successful football schedule, under the helm of another new coach to the area, Hal Traviolia, Lakeland fans have come to expect superlative performance from their favorite Warriors. There appears little reason to be disappointed, as things are shaping up on the hardwood under coach Heady. First Year Here Coach Heady, a high school and college basketball star in his own ' right, comes to Wawasee from Griffith where he spent four fruitful years as head coach. It is his first year at Wawasee, and he, too, is expecting great things from his Warriors. The first game of the season is a home game — against Carroll (near Fort Wayne) on Saturday, Nov. 24 — and this should be a shake-down game. No one can be sure of the strength of the Warriors, much less the strength of visiting Carroll. The second game follows rapidly on the heels of the first, to be played the following Tuesday, Nov. 27, at neighboring Fairfield. The card shows nine games at home and nine away, coach Heady points out. He said he has ten returning lettermen, five of

whom have had considerable experience. The Warriors had a record of eight wins to 13 losses a year ago, and coach Heady wants to better this record by a considerable margin. He said that while basketball practice formally began October 1, he got the football players only last Monday, and is busy shaping them up. Those Returning Among those returning are tall Dave Madrick (6’4”), who will hold down the center position. Jim Stout (6’3”), who averaged 16 points a game in 13 games played last year, was a leading scorer and second leading rebounder last year, coach Heady stated, and will fill a forward position. The other forward position will be held down by Dave Hamilton (6’2”), who averaged 10 points a game last year. A certain guard will be Tad Chamberlin (6’), who averaged 13.7 points a game last year, while two players are now a tossup for the other guard position. They are Greg Fidler (6’), who averaged 10 points a game last year, and Bill Fawley (6’). Backup in the forward position will be Dave Schopf, coming out after the football season, and Mark Smith (6’1”), also coming out after football, who had a

seven point average a year ago. Jeff Rhodes (6’5”), back from football and ‘‘a good jumper,” says coach Heady, will back up the center position. Tim Yoder, who averaged four points a game last year, will back up the guard position, and shows a lot of promise. Other teammates will ‘feel pressure” from Yoder all hiring the season. Paul Miller. At the same time Chad Singery (6’3”), back from football, has been on the sick list, but should be ready for the first game. Opponents will have to contend with Chad. A number of juniors will be getting experience in junior varsity, said coach Heady, building up for backup and for next year’s team.
