baiziNjO; around MB v / Gaylord Jones, on Florida vacation, sent us an editorial from the Naples Daily News which he liked, written by Canadian columnist Gordon Sinclair: “This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people in all the earth. “As long as 60 years ago, when I first started to read newspapers, I read of floods on the Yellow River and the Yangtse. Who rushed in with men and money to help? The Americans did. “They have helped control floods on the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges and the Niger . . . Germany, Japan and to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. “None of these countries is paying even the interest on its remaining debts toT the United States. “When distant cities are hit by earthquake it is the United States that hurries to help. Managua, Nicaragua, Peru are the most recent examples. “So far this year, about 60 American communities have been flattened by tornadoes. Nobody has helped. “The Marshall Plan, the Truman Policy, pumped billions upon billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent war-mongering Americans . . . “You talk about Japanese technocracy and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy and you find men on the moon, not once, but several times ... and safely home again. &KS3UXXSS3S9S3S36X9SSS3SXSCX3S3e

“You talk about scandals and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at . . . “When the Americans get out of this bind ... as they will . . . who could blame them if they said ‘the hell with the rest of the world.’ . . . “I could name you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. “Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I’m one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of these.” “As the twig is bent, so will the tree grow.” Someone said that, but we can't be sure who. Anyway, this thought crossed our mind as we saw 11-year-old Scott Heady, son of our new basketball coach, complete with athletic sweat shirt, watching his dad work out this year’s team for the Saturday game. Scott was bouncing a basketball along the sidelines with a close eye on his dad. Asked if he wanted to be a coach some day, he said, “I don't know. I guess.” Yep, Sea Nymph plant 4 at Syracuse does have a new sign, but they are located on South Huntington street as you can plainly see, and not on South Harrison, so don’t get excited Harrison street residents. Even though short of help, neither rain nor snow Friday morning (which we had both) kept town employee Thomas Gilbert and his crew of two from removing the water pipe obstruction in the sidewalk near the library which involved breaking the new cement sidewalk, removing the protruding piping and placing a flush cap and cement around same. It is nice and Tom said had they (his department) been notified sooner, the situation could have been taken care of before the new cement sidewalk was poured. Hear our town's Donna (Mrs. Jerry or R. G.) Johnson had her first air solo last week and admitting to being slightly nervous, loved every minute of it. A number of pre-schoolers numbering 14 in all, got a nice treat last Friday when three ladies of the Primary Mothers club put on a puppet show of Little Red Riding Hood, at the library. The talented women were Mrs. John Roth, Mrs. John Rose and Mrs. Don Yeargain.
And speaking of talent, the stage and prop used for the show was cleverly constructed by Oscar Bjella (and frills by wife Bonnie, children’s librarian at the library.) Mrs. Bjella is constantly working on creations to thrill the youth and has a small attache case filled to the brim with puppets she has been making for possible puppet shows herself. Realtor Tom McClain is the moving oneJ Tom was behind the Hook stores coming to Syracuse and North Webster, then he built the new Ben Franklin store. What now? He is the new owner of Tri Lakes Tavern on Shriner Lake, just off road 33. More than a tavern, the place has a nice restaurant and family room. / —o— Mr. and Mrs. James Bachelder of North Webster might just strike it rich in oil, this column learned. They reurned awhile back from a trip to Montana where they looked over a 200-acre open range tract they own near Grass Range. Babe says, “And those little oil wells are moving right up our way.” With the oil shortage and all, she just may have something there. The striking couple said the last time they visited the area was 14 years ago — “and it looks just the same.” Jim’s dad, the late H. K. Bachelder, an Indianapolis corporate attorney, bought the land many years ago. Syracuse uptown businessmen are planning a noon luncheon meeting at the Palace of Sweets at 12 o’clock Monday, Nov. 26, to talk about uptown promotions. Anyone in business in the uptown area is invited and urged to attend. If Syracuse dentist Eugene Yoder seems to be whistling more these days, maybe he has good reason to. He has two charming helpers on his staff — young ladies, if you will. They are Jan Werling, of Fort Wayne, a dental technician and an IU (Fort Wayne campus) grad. The other is Darlene Whan, a West Noble high school student on the ICE program. All this is certainly not to take a thing away from Mary (Mrs. Robert) Fisher, doc's “Gal Friday,” who has been a steady stand-by and will remain at her same job. See, doc, we said we’d tell. Incidentally, in Dr. Yoder's office is this cute sign: “Getting dentists to read their mail is like pulling teeth.”
Children of the community will be in for their usual free show treat, plus a live stage act, at the Pickwick Theatre on December 15, and the usual two showings, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. It was nice to see Jean (Mrs. Robert) Reed on the street last Monday following an extended illness. Vega Homes is furnishtag the trailer unit for Santa Claus to participate in events at Warsaw on Friday evening, including a parade starting at city hall at 7 p.m. Friday is the last day to return mental health Christmas gifts for the Fort Wayne school, to the Journal offices. Have you seen Richard Lemberg’s pelican creation on display in the bank lobby? Junior high students have done great thus far in the school citrus sale with proceeds going to the athletic departments. Helen and Willard Nusbaum arrived today to pick up a load of miscellaneous belongings and will be leaving in a day or two to return to their new home at Saint Cloud, Fla. Willard said they had no problem gas wise on their trip, paying about 35.9 until journeying north from Kentucky where gas took a 10 cent hike. Happy Thanksgiving holiday to you all!
