Blackford stops Wawasee 28-14 in semi-state
By DOUG HOERR A strong Blackford squad defeated the Wawasee Warriors in the state semi-final game Saturday night 28-14. An estimated crowd of 4,000 observed the bout which took place on the Warrior’s home field. The Warriors showed great poise on their first set of downs as they drove 73 yards for a TD. This made nine out of 10 games the Warriors had scored on their first possession. Mike Vanlaningham, who saw limited running action because of a bruised knee, rushed for 50 of the 73 yards gained. Mark Smith scored at 8:45 on a keeper from the two. Smith rushed fa* a total of 47 yards. Blackford keying on an interception scored late in the

quarter to tie it six all. Brown of Blackford bulled five yards for the score. PAT kick put them ahead 7-6. The Warriors were hurt both defensively and offensively when senior star Mark Reiff suffered a head injury. Reiff was admitted to the Goshen hospital and later released. Mark Smith, with a long bomb to Rick Brannock, added another six to the scoreboard. Smith added a two point conversion to take the lead 14-7. This TD used only seven seconds of the second quarter. A 25-yarifpass from Perry to end Robbins and a PAT tied the score 14-14. Quarterback Perry of the Bruins had a fine evening as his fakes fooled the players, fans and even the officials.
At the end of the first half the Warriors had out rushed the Bruins 121-115 yards. The second half was disasterous for Wawasee as they rushed for a total of 12 yards. The Bruins capitalized off the immobile Warrior offense and found little resistance with the defense as they rushed for 147 yards. The Bruins scored both in the third and fourth quarters. The first TD came on a two-yard drive by Perry. PAT kick split the uprights. Robbins added the final score of the game when he fell on a blocked punt in the end zone. The PAT made the score 28-14. • Fine Record Although the Warrior team may be discouraged they need not be ashamed for they have produced the finest record in Wawasee history and provided the Lakeland community many hours of excited viewing. The Warriors under coach Hal Traviolia have accumulated two titles — The first is the Northern Lakes Conference championship that they share with Plymouth and Warsaw and the second is placing in the top four in AA competition. The Blackford Bruins go to Greenfield for the AA championship. Blackford will represent district II in the game. Statistics < W B First downs 9 19 Net yards rushing 133 262 Net yards passing 60 91

Public Service hearing set
A legal notice of a public hearing of the Public Service Commission of Indiana appears this week in the matter of the joint petition of Water Utilities Incorporated and Rural Utilities, Inc., for an order approving and authorizing the sale and purchase of certain water utility properties in Kosciusko county, and the application of water utility rates, tariffs, charges, rules and regulations to customers in the area to be acquired, and also granting all other appropriate relief in the premises. Said hearing will be in the Eat food, not snacks Many teenagers suffer from poor nutrition because of an overconvenienced, over-harried, over-televised life, according to a prominent nutritionist. The hectic pace of family life and a full schedule of dates, sports and other activities leave little time for regular, balanced meals. As a result, young people often turn to vending machines and sporadic, convenience-type eating, getting nothing but “junk food with no nutrition.” She also criticized the many snack commercials on television and said amphetamines and marijuana may also affect the appetite, allowing one to be satisfied with only snack foods. “Snacking has become away of life,” she said.
