32-20 win puts WHS in play-offs

By DOUG HOERR Hal Traviolia is a very proud man at this moment and has good reason for being so. His Warriors have won nine in a row, are tied for first in the Northern Lakes Conference and have qualified to represent district five in the AA state play-offs. Last Friday night’s bailgame against the North Wood Panthers clinched the NLC championship and the state play-off as the mighty Warrior team defeated the Panthers 32-20. Wawasee jumped off to an early lead when Mark Smith took

the ball in from the (me on a keeper. This was the first game that the Warrior offense did not score the first time they got their hands on the ball. Instead it took the second set of downs to produce the score. Brent Hughes brought the Panthers right back into the bailgame when on the next play he ran the Warrior kick off back 88 yards. Hughes was the star of the North Wood team as he scored all of their touchdowns, added a PAT and ran 52 yards in 17 carries. Records Broken The Warriors got back on the

warpath as Mike Vanlaningham took the ball in from the 28 in just three plays. Vanlaningham had his finest night of the season as he posted an impressive 210 yards in 34 carries. His two touchdowns gave him 96 points for the season and he has accumulated 1,157 yards. Both of these figures break previous school records held by Kim Cripe. Wawasee scored once more before half time when Vanlaningham scored from the two. The Warriors exited with a 19-6 lead. A fired up Panther team appeared in the second half as they matched the Warriors with two TD’s. A Mark Smith to Rick Brannock aerial produced the only score to either team in the third quarter. Smith found Brannock all alone in the end zone and hit him with an eight yarder. North Wood capitalized on a Warrior fumbled punt as Hughes hit paydirt four plays later on a 15-yard run, to start the fourth quarter scoring. Sophomore running back and kicking specialist Ralph Reiff added the Warrior's final TD. Reiff, doing most of the handling during the drive, bullied his way in from the five. He then added the PAT. North Wood drew final blood as a 46-yard pass from Sam Ehret to Terry Weldy set up Hughes’ third TD of the evening. The two-yard run left the score at 32-20 for the remaining seconds of the game. To Play Blackford Wawasee faces a tough Blackford squad which possesses an 8-0 record in the first game of the play-offs. Tell City faces Greenfield in the opposite

How can you come away pleasant? Remember you are a long standing I.U. fan and the times you have fought back then daydream about things and people. The game is 60 minutes but we outscored them 13-7 the last 34 minutes and had another touchdown called back on a fluke type of penalty. The call was correct but it was away from the play and an accidental type of thing. A wide receiver ran into the comer back in the end zone 40 yards from the action. I guess he got to watching the game. One can dream of the three fantastic catches made by Mike Flanagin and remember he will be around one season and three games. Our second season starts next Saturday. The Michigan game was one we had to play but if Bill Atkinson had been able to get one more step and go all the way for seven point lead the fire might have caught and it could have been a game. This is an example of speed. The Michigan back — Heater — was fast enough to get there. He had the angle and the speed and got it done. It behooves us to recruit speedy backs — as well as big fast linemen. We were a step slow all the way both offense and defense. The freshmen next year will have a chance to play and progress that much to senior stardom — which is where the pro contracts come. Joe Doggett, from Jeffersonville, was a highly touted freshman — got hurt before the season , but was playing yesterday. He will help. He is green but showed a chunk of promise.
