The Warriors scored 10 out of 12 times that they had the ball. The Warrior defense did an excellent job of containing the Squires ground game as Manchester picked up only four yards rushing. Wawasee, however, found no difficulties penetrating the Squires defense as they rushed for 329 and passed for 183, for a total of 512 yards. Leading rushers for the game were Mike Vanlaningham — 102 yards, Ralph Reiff — 88, Jack Schopf — 44 and Alan Kitson — 40. In the first quarter Wawasee leaped off to a good start as Mark Smith added two TDs. The first was on a one-yard plunge and the second was a 60-yard punt return. Vanlaningham scored on a
beautifully executed 40 yard romp. Rick Brannock and Vanlaningham both lit the score board in the second quarter. Brannock on a 43-yard pass reception from Smith. Vanlaningham scored on the option around left end from five yards out. The Warriors exited at halftime with a 34-0 lead. Second Half Alan Kitson scored his first TD of the season when he drove one yard at 6:05 in the third quarter. Manchester came suddenly into the spotlight when Dean Wendel passed over the Warrior defense to hit Kris Airgood with a 75-yard bomb. Ralph Reiff added a TD at 1:51 when he sprinted 15 yards for the score. Fourth quarter scoring arrived quickly when Smith, on one of his 10-11 pass completions, sent Gary Dean scurrying into the end zone. The play covered 16-yards. Sophomore quarterback Larry Allen then replaced Smith and did a fine job as he passed for one touchdown and handed off for another. Doug Brown caught the 43-yard pass for one score and Jack Schqpf took the handoff for a 17-yard TD run. The only other scoring came when Ron Bauman dumped the Squire quarterback for a safety. Overwhelming Statistics At this point in the season the Warriors have accumulated some overwhelming statistics. In the rushing department they have their opponents topped 1,911 yards to 395. This gives the Warriors a 39.7 game point average and their opponents a 5.3 game point average. Wawasee is now 5-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference standings. Next week, however, the streak will be put to the test against NLC foe North Wood Panthers in a home game. The Warriors have an 8-0 record and are tied with Homestead, near Fort Wayne, since Homestead lost 22-8 to Carroll Friday night. Both teams are tied with 20 points. Should Wawasee and Homestead both win Friday they will each receive three points and be deadlocked again at 23 all. If the tie results the Indiana High School Athletic Association procedure would be used to break the tie. This calls for the division champ to be the team whose opponents have the best composite rating point average. At the present time Wawasee’s opponents have an overall 29-48 record and Homestead’s opponents have a 25-47 record. It is also possible that the best composite won-lost record would not result in a higher composite rating-point average. The fact Wawasee has played four class A schools — West Noble, Bremen, Fairfield and North Manchester — has kept the Warriors from being on top alone. Wawasee got just two playoff points each for their victories over these schools. Also involved in the first place tie is East Gary. Not to be left out for possible playoff contenders in area five are Fort Wayne Concordia and New Haven. Any of the five teams could end up in the number one slot. The suspense will end next Tuesday when the IHSAA releases the playoff pairings. Wawasee to host girls sectional The second Indiana High School Athletic Association girls volleyball sectional will be played at Wawasee high school on November 5 and 6. Game time for each session is 6:30 p.m. The following schools will be represented in the tournament: Argos, Whitko, Columbia City, Warsaw, Triton and Wawasee. The first elimination game will start at 1 p.m. with the championship game at 6 p.m. The state volleyball championships will be played at Ben Davis high school in Indianapolis on November 17. Attend 'Sneak Preview' showing Pickwick theatre manager Tim Yeager attended a “sneak Preview” of Walt Disney’s new animated feature “Robin Hood” at the Arlington theatre, Indianapolis, on Saturday morning.
