ARoUND^^v&— ft psgy mb One of several pictures from Mrs. 1. B. Bockman of North Webster, dated 1909 and sent to her step*mother by Link Scarlett, appears at the top of our column this week. Does anyone in the community remember this band? Appears it is a small world. Seems when Jack and Chris Stump visited at Honolulu this month, they spotted LaVada Dean there in a muu-muu. June (Mrs. Robert) Laudeman of Syracuse Lake will be appearing on the Homemakers television program Tuesday. Bob and Joann Owens are enthusiasts of the civic theater at Nappanee where Bob will be appearing in a production the first week in November and wife Joann is working on wardrobe. As reported here a week ago, The M-J was politely taken to task for overlooking the high school’s fine band in its report of football games and attending activities. So ... we did pay attention to the band Friday night at the Wawasee-Concord game, and, sure enough, it is all our

anonymous letter writer purports. Dave Blackwell is doing a fine job with his “Wawasee Marching Warrior Band” at football games and their presence and performance add color and spirit to the occasion. This spirit, plays a large part in theMvarriors* winning season. August (“Bud”) Hook commented at the VIP party at his new Syracuse drug store last Wednesday night that the Drug Abuse Rap Session, held just prior to the party, was one of the best the company has ever had. He said 105 area youths attended, and he credited the good attendance to cooperation from the area schools and churches. One church, it was reported, had a group of 35 youngsters to attend. Work is progressing well on the Pearl street public parking lot in Syracuse. Last week a bed of gravel was put down, and soon it is hoped it can be blacktopped. It was a case of instant grass at the new branch of the State Bank of Syracuse, located on road 13 south of Syracuse. Landscape artists put the grass in, and by nightfall Saturday the appearance of the attractive branch was completely different. Opening date is not far in the future. And, incidentally, it’s rumored the tract of land on the north of the branch bank has been sold and that “something” will be going in there. And, speaking of banks, the move has been made at North

Webster from the old bank to its new Counting House quarters, and the old bank is being torn down. Grand opening for this

bank is down the road a piece, also. The Counting House bank is decorated in a Medieval theme with titles above offices traditional to King Arthur’s court, i. e., Lancelot, Queen Guenevere and Merlin. You’ll want to see this for yourself. Lakeland youth center director Clark Exmeyer appears quite excited about some new games and equipment arriving soon at the center, and has many forthcoming plans for youth of the area. Millie Savage has returned to her duties at the bank following a week’s vacation and some time spent at the state Grange. A possible combined book store and travel agency planned in the new Pickwick building? In addition to a sporting goods

store, a men’s store, department store, ladies dress shop, all already announced earlier, the block is shaping up great as far as occupants, many wishing to open for business the middle of November. Work is progressing rapidly in the block and the gazebo entrance should be finished soon. While out in the village, Hook’s opening on Thursday, following the Wednesday night reception and brief look-see, was great and Ben Franklin is progressing well for its opening in November. Our town is really shaping up. Ebnenezer Ladies meet in Bitner home Thursday Mrs. Howard Bitner was hostess for the Thursday meeting of the Ebenezer Ladies Aid group of the Lakeland area. She was

There were 11 members in attendance and one guest, Mrs. Emma Souder. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Ray Wilkinson.
