Season record 5-0 — Warriors score 50-0 homecoming victory
By DOUG HOERR The Wawasee Warriors, in their homecoming appearance, skunked the Fairfield Falcons 500. Another great defense effort by the Warriors stopped Fairfield’s offense for 63 yards rushing and 42 yards passing and eight first downs. The Warrior offense was again very explosive as they shot over the Falcons defense for seven TD’s. Four of the TD’s were scored by senior halfback Mike Vanlaningham as he had a fantastic night, both offensively and defensively. / Vanlaningham set a new record in the number of TD’s scored in one game. The old record of three was held by Kim

Cripe. Also having a fine night were Rick Brannock, who scored on a 40 yard TD pass; Gary Dean, with a 43 yard TD catch; and sophomore quarterback Larry Allen who scored one TD and passed for another. Wawasee got on the warpath early in the game, when after just seven plays, Vanlaningham slashed off tackle for the score. The next TD drive was started off by a Doug Brown fumble recovery. Four plays later a 13 pass from Mark Smith to Vanlaningham was good for the score. After the Falcons had their turn with the ball, Wawasee took over on the Falcons 39 yard line with 46 seconds remaining in the
quarter. Vanlaningham took the pitch from Smith and sprinted 30 yards for the TD. The score at the end of the first quarter found Wawasee on top by 22 points. Wawasee’s only TD drive in the second quarter was started when Gary Dean came up with a Fairfield fumble. A Smith keeper set the ball on the seven, then another ’ handoff to Vanlaningham put the ball in the end zone. Wawasee departed from the field with a 28-0 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Wawasee finally got a drive started after two turnovers earlier in the period. A Vanlaningham run and Smith keeper set up the score. Smith passed 20 yards to Gary Dean, who ran in the remaining 22 for the score. Early fourth quarter action saw a dazzling punt return of 80 yards by Mark Smith. The run unfortunately was called back because of a clipping penalty. A Ralph Reiff pass interception, his third of the evening, set up the next TD. Larry Allen showed great potential as he hit Rick Brannock for a 40 yard TD pass. With 59 seconds remaining on the clock, Allen took the ball in from the one for the final score of the ball
