Opening is scheduled for next spring. In this photo with developer Tom McClain are John Camden, Robert Hersha and Al Regenos on the tractor. While pilings are being driven for the new Hook’s store, similar pilings are being put down for a 50 by 60 foot store on the south edge of the Hook’s store. McClain said he has no tenants for such a store but he hopes to in the near future. A large store or two smaller stores could occupy the ground south of Hook’s, McClain stated.
Community education classes begin at Wawasee high
The community education classes of the Lakeland Community School Corporation are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 23. In a departure from using the old title of adult education, the school corporation is trying to organize an evening program that will be of interest and service to more persons, both young and old, in the Lakeland community. Operating on the belief that given the opportunity to make fuller use of their schools, people will work together to improve themselves, their homes and their communities. The programs that are listed here for the fall term are ones that have been suggested by various persons in the community. These classes will be given provided there are enough people interested to form the class. To justify holding a class, there should be at least 10 persons willing to participate. Special interest groups in the community who would like to share with other people are encouraged to do so through the community education class concept. Any questions concerning the community education classes should be- directed to Dave McGrew, vocational director for the Lakeland Community School Corporation at Wawasee high school. In order to register for any of the classes that are listed below, call the high school and leave your name, address, phone number and the name of the class

Wednesday crash kills two Michigan sisters near Webster
Two Michigan sisters, aged in the 60’s, were killed last Wednesday afternoon around 4 p.m. in a broad-side collision of two autos on state road 13 about three and one-half miles south of North Webster. Pronounced dead at the scene was Evelyn E. Kirsch, 64, 124 Burr Oak, Kalamazoo, a passenger in the auto driven by Edith A. Huizenga, 62, 1302 Banbury Rd., Kalamazoo. Mrs. Huizenga died at 9 p.m. in Parkview hospital in Fort Wayne of multiple injuries. Officials said Mrs. Kirsch died of multiple fractures and injuries. Driver of the second auto, Fred C. Snyder, 71, box 346 Pierceton, suffered from shock but was not injured. Passing Witnesses reported to police that Snyder was attempting to pass a third southbound auto as the Michigan car approached.

Sewers — (continued from page 1) Drake said the Spanishspeaking people are in need of help when they hold dances, birthday parties, etc., as out of town persons are attending these with some trouble resulting. He said his department has been quite busy with prowlers and anonymous phone calls being reported. Board members said they thought a Spanish-speaking person on the police force would be a great asset to the community. They agreed to put Mediano on a probationary basis for 60 days. Mediano, Alex Morris and Joe Hernandez were present at the meeting. Pitchin Mrs. Gale Chapman, a member of the Syracuse-Wawasee Garden club, was present and encouraged the board to approve a proclamation supporting the “Pitch In” program.
A PROCLAMATION We proclaim October 15-30 “Pitch-in” dates for Milford and the surrounding lake area. This is in conjunction with the President’s “Keep America Beautiful” program and is to encourage all to help with litter control and keep our town and area beautiful.
Town attorney William I. Garrard told board members he had filed a motion for dismissal on the park suit and the attorney for those persons from the Estep family who are suing the town for a portion of the Lakeside park property was given until October 12 to show cause as to why the case should not be dismissed. The attorney, Lee Mellinger, has asked for a deferment until October 15 when he has promised to contact Garrard. No report was given on the park board or a president for said board. Members of the town board are still looking for someone to replace Dean Troup. Troup, board president, submitted his resignation at last month’s town board meeting. At the close of the meeting board members stated they had been receiving telephone calls from townspeople concerning the “nude” dancing at a local tavern. Garrard had been contacted earlier on the matter and read several laws concerning such actions. There is nothing in the current state law which prohibits this as far as board members could learn Monday. - Car-motorcycle accident Friday David B. Schopf, 18, 212 South Huntington street, Syracuse, was headed east on CR 1100 N Friday afternoon, Oct. 5, when a motorcycle headed west and operated by Grover C. Doss, 26, Attica, Ohio, went out of control and slid sideways in front of him. County police Sgt. Alan Rovenstine investigated and set damage at $175 to the Schopf car and S2OO to the motorcycle.
Authorities indicated the Snyder auto skidded 94 feet as the driver apparently applied his brakes and attempted to pull back into his driving lane. Skid marks showed the Huizenga auto veered right in the northbound lane in an attempt to miss the oncoming car and dropped off the pavement edge, spun around out of control in the loose gravel and skidded across the roadway into the southbound lane of traffic. The Snyder auto hit the passenger side of the Michigan car in the southbound lane of the highway about five and one-half feet from the west side of the highway. impact ot the crash pinned Mrs. Kirsch in the auto as both vehicles spun off the highway into a ditch. State and county officers investigated and listed damage to the Michigan car at $2,000, with S9OO to the Pierceton car.
