Warriors stop Redskins 33-13 in home opener
By DOUG HOERR Wawasee’s offensive and defensive squads proved very effective again as they awarded to the Goshen Redskins their second defeat of the season. Goshen’s 10 quarter shut out record was demolished quickly in their 11th, as the Warriors tacked up a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Rick Dahlstrom entered the first score as he took a handoff in from the one yard line. After the first score, Warrior fans seldom used their seats as the scores kept coming in. A blocked punt was picked up by Jack Schopf, who sprinted the remaining 19 yards for the score. As if that wasn’t enough to humble the Redskins, Wawasee, with an on side recovery, added the third touchdown of the evening. Mark Smith, having another great night, threw one of his six for 12 completions eight yards to Chris Paulus for the score. In the second quarter, another Rick Dahlstrom interception put the belli on the four. Then the familiar number 30, Mike Vanlaningham, broke through for the TD. Vanlaningham had another tremendous game as he

MAN ON THE MOVE — Wawasee high school football coach Hal Traviolia was very much the man on the move as he urged his Warriors on to victory against the Goshen Redskins here Friday night. Final score: Wawasee 33, Goshen 13. It was the third victory for Traviolia and his Warriors in three starts.
rushed 101 yards for two touchdowns and had a fine defensive game. Coach Traviolia complimented the Warrior defense for another great game, as they contained the Redskins to a minus nine yards rushing in the first half. A respirited Goshen team came back on the field the second half, looking to make up a 26-0 deficit. They showed they meant business as they ground off a 77 yard drive. That was ended when Glen Frick went in from the three to put Goshen on the scoreboard. PAT was good. Wawasee was unable to put together a scoring attack in this quarter.
PLAYER INJURED Ralph Reiff, a sophomore kicker and defensive player for the Wawasee Warriors, was injured during the last quarter of the game and was taken to the Goshen hospital for treatment of a head injury. He was treated and released and has returned to school. Fourth quarter saw action early as Vanlaningham took the ball for 15 and 10 yard carries in two plays. On the third he breezed off tackle for the score. Goshen then put together its final scoring drive. A Frick to Baer pass started the drive that ended seven plays later when Bob Lau caught a one yard TD pass with 8:45 remaining in the game. The only other action was nonbeneficial to the Warriors. Ralph Reiff, after intercepting a pass was decked on the sidelines and received a hospitalizing head injury. At the end, Wawasee found themselves with a 33-13 victory and a three game winning streak. The streak will be tested next Friday night in a home game against the Bremen Lions. Statistics WHS GHS First Down 14 8 Net Yds. Rushing 165 66 Net Yds.
