Wowosee wins over Columbia City 4-3

Last week’s Wednesday evening tennis match saw Wawasee win over Columbia City 4-3 on Columbia City turf. Results of the singles play were as follows: Greg Fidler defeated Loren Rice 10-3 Bill Fawley lost to Paul Farrar 6-10 Mark Goshert lost to Dennis Warner 3-10 Vince Rhodes defeated Al Sederland 10-3 Rob Zurcher defeated Mark Bock 10-7 Results of the doubles play for the day were: Fidler and Rhodes defeated Rice and Farrar 11-9 Fawley and Goshert lost to Warner and Sederland 5-10 On September 10 the Wawasee team was defeated by La Ville at that school by a 7-0 score. In the singles play results were: Fidler lost to Terry Magnuson 4-10 Fawley lost to Steve Herbster 3-10 Rhodes lost to Steve Magnuson 3-10 Zurcher was defeated by Phil Clark 6-10 It was Zurcher’s first loss for the year. WHS defeats Rochester 24-16 for NLC victory

By DOUG HOERR The Wawasee Warriors posted their second win of the season last Friday against the Rochester Zebras. The 24-16 win gave the Warriors a 1-0 record in Northern Lakes Conference action. Wawasee, after receiving the opening kick-off, marched down the field in 16 plays that ended when halfback Mike Vanlaningham took a handoff from quarterback Mark Smith and broke into the end zone. The point after failed. At the end of the first quarter Wawasee led by six. Vanlaningham had a very fine night as he rushed 156 yards in 34 attempts for a 4.5 average. Second quarter action proved itself exciting to Wawasee and Rochester fans alike. Mark Smith started the scoring when he took the snap and broke three yards for a touchdown. Again, the point after failed. Saturday Scrambles winners at Wawasee First place winners at the scrambles play on Saturday, Sept. 15, were Leßoy Chokey, Pat Money, Tobe Troyer and Eva Sue Tolliver. Bill Homes, Carl Borden, Orville Vanderßeyden and Sue Kemble were second place winners in the event. Season tickets on sale at WHS Football season tickets are on sale this week at the Wawasee high school bookstore and in the junior high school principal’s offices in the several schools of the corporation. They will also be on sale at the gate this Friday night. A large crowd is anticipated for the Goshen game and persons are urged to purchase tickets early to avoid waiting in line. Freshmen stop Panthers 8-0 Thursday The Wawasee high school freshman football team won its game Thursday, Sept. 13, over North Wood, 8-0. The winning touchdown was scored by Dan Walker on a pass from quarterback Keith Cripe. The extra point was scored by Jay Thorn. Kevin Coy was the leading rusher with 68 yards and Cripe completed six of 13 passes for 115 yards. The lead tackler for Wawasee was Greg Miller with five tackles and four assists. Mitch Ousley had two tackles and 10 assists. Wawasee gained a total of 261 yards while holding North Wood to 244 yards. The next home game will be Thursday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m.

Then Rochester suddenly came into the spotlight as halfback Jack Swank went around end for 20 yards to put Rochester on the scoreboard. The two point conversion attempt was good. Rochester then turned around and scored again when Bob Schoen took a five yard pass from quarterback Johnson. The two point conversion was successful and the Warriors found themselves behind for the first time this year 16-12. In the first half Wawasee gave up only one first down and 13 yards rushing plus 43 in the air. In the third quarter Rick Dahlstrom turned in the big play of the evening when he took a Rochester interception 55 yards for a touchdown. The score put the Warriors back on top by two as the point after failed. Fourth quarter action saw Wawasee put the lid on the game as the Warriors ate up the clock Syracuse junior high defeats Pierceton 13-0 The Syracuse Yellow Jackets opened their 1973 football season with a 13-0 win over Pierceton. In the first quarter the Yellow Jackets marched down to the 40 yard line before punting to Pierceton. On the third play from scrimmage seventh grader Dan Andrews picked a Pierceton pass out of the air and ran 30 yards for the TD. On the extra point, Rick McKibben split the up rights which made the score 7-0. In the second and third quarters the defense continued to dominate the game. At the start of the fourth quarter Bryan Smith hit Ken Patton on a TD pass which covered 65 yards. During the game Bryan Smith hit his favorite receivers, Ken Patton, Lon White and Dave Owens for 161 yards. Most impressive was the running of Stan Kroh who gained 56 yards on the ground. The Syracuse defense was led by James Glon with nine tackles, Rick McKibben with five tackles and Ted Knudsen with five tackles and two assists. In all it was an impressive victory, both offensively and defensively. Hie next Syracuse game will be Tuesday night at Wawasee high school where the Yellow Jackets will be hosted by the Trojans of Milford, game time: 6:30. Kenda Miller forced off 1000 N south of Syracuse Kenda S. Miller, 19, Cromwell, was westbound on CR 1000 N, three miles south of Syracuse at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, when a pickup truck forced her car off the road and it struck a fence and utility pole.
