Traviolia leads Warriors to 53-0 victory over Chargers
By DOUG HOERR The Wawasee Warriors seemed to defy gravity last Saturday as they soared over the West Nolde Chargers 53-0. The Warriors, under the supervision of the new head coach, Hal Traviolia, opened the season with an explosive offense and rugged defense that promises to give the Warrior fans a season of exciting football. Wawasee’s defensive end, Chad Singery, recovered a West Noble fumble that started the Warrior’s first touchdown drive. Halfback Mike Vanlaningham ended the drive with a seven yard run. Ralph Reiff’s conversion gave Wawasee a 7-0 lead. Vanlaningham also scored another six points when he charged three yards for a touchdown in the second period. With two minutes, 30 seconds left in the

quarter, junior quarterback Mark Smith hit end Cris Paulus with one of his 14 pass completions to give the Warriors a 130 lead at the end of the first period. The only score in the second quarter came when a Smith to Brannock pass set up the Vanlaningham touchdown. Ralph Reiff connected with the conversion, giving Wawasee a 20-0 lead at the half. The third quarter started on a sour note for the Warriors when a pass was intercepted by the Chargers. Wawasee got back on the right track, however, when Dan Miller recovered a West Noble fumble. A Smith to Paulus aerial set up the next score. Mark Smith passed to junior end Jon Owens who took the ball in for the score. The point after, by Reiff, connected.
Another fine Smith pass was received by Paulus on a third down with two yards to go. Sophomore Ralph Reiff then apparently declared ownership of the ball as he took a handoff across for one score with 3:15 remaining and then at 2:13 he turned the only charger interception into his second touchdown of the afternoon. Reiff made good the point after. Reiff showed excellent control of the foot as he was 5-8 in the point after department. The score at the end of the third quarter revealed the Warriors leading 400. Early fourth quarter action saw sophomore running back, Jeff Miller, score from three yards out. Ralph Reiff added the point after. With 4:41 remaining on the clock, junior quarterback Rick Dahlstrom found himself in the end zone following a dazzling 60 yard sprint. For the remaining minutes of the game neither team could put together a score. So at the. gun, the tired but happy Warriors found themselves on top by 53 points. Coach Traviolia summed up the game with this comment: “We played a good game, wish they could all be that good.” Statistics WHS WN First Downs 18 2 Net Yards Rushing 244 9 Net Yards Passing 173 -2 Passes Attempted 21 11 Passes Completed 14 1 Yards Penalized 50 15 Fumbles 1 6 Fumbles Lost ’ 1 6 Interceptions by Punts 17 Punt Average 35 yards 28 yards

September 9, 1973. Different coaches, different offenses, different look but we are the same old customers. Still loyal. We have returned. The various offenses will keep the defenses guessing but it will bring some early season procedure penalties. Corso likes to innovate but he is a sound tactician. A lot of things can happen — and will. Sometime during the season a safety will not field a punt and it will roll for about an 80 yard gain. Wenzel is some kicker. Maybe the best in the nation. The two pass receivers are as good a pair as we have had — as a pair. Smock and Flanagin and neither is a senior. The biggest defensive alignment up front in our history. There is Barszilauskas — 270, McQuire — 288, Elmer Burton (Freshman 254), maybe Jameson 250 with middle linebacker Don Thomas at 255. Quarterback is not a problem. Many surprises in store here. A man of some considerable knowledge thinks he may be better than Gonso. He throws better long. The old line coaches will be after Lee Corso. He is not the keep them under the thumb coach. He thinks they should have fun. Woody Hayes apd Bob Schembeckler will be after his hide but may find it hard to get. He has the respect of the players and they like to do their “Thing”. Lee Corso is in command of the ship and their thing will not interfere. One of the stars found out that a five o’clock meeting did not mean two minutes after — and quick. Another star now knows who will designate where any player plays. Both now realize they are better for it and will be great. They are satisfied and respectful. What more can you ask? We have worked hard on specialty teams. We may be far ahead of the other college

coaches but I think our kick coverage will be tremendously improved. We were so weak here but he has good athletes there. Quinn Buckner leads the parade again. - Corso will gamble on 4th down. He has said it. He doesn’t talk to her himself.; He means those things. Henry Cunningham, brother of Nate from the Rose Bowl squad is captain of the specialty teams. Maybe both brothers can say they played in the Rose Bowl. Henry has three years to try it. So — Be there early. Don’t miss the fun. If you do you’ll be sorry.
