September 2,1973 from the 26th row and the thirty yard line. After the secret practices of the weds end and the conference between Quinn Buckner and the coaches, both football and basketball, there is a lot of speculation and an announcement this afternoon but we go to press now. I still take the “he will play side of the coin” but don’t toss it too often. Our team appears set on offense. We could be a 30 point (maybe a game) team. We have experience and quality in the interior line, we have excellent running backs, Ken St. Pierre at fullback, very good ends and if any quarterback throws well — 30 could be. Some of the good athletes will be worked at offensive tackle so it is up to the defense which has fine material and no experience — important in football. There are 5 back on passes. A mistake a game for a player makes 5 per game for a team. Some of them go for touchdowns — do not want to be a pessimist but that is a truism. Truisms bear thinking but one thing helps—people can alter the effect. We do not take a backseat as far as people is concerned. With this greenhorn group the pressure that Carl Barszilauskas could put on passers becomes important. He is ready to go and gosh awful determined. This is a tag key. If something happens to him John Jordan will be the man to do th job — and he is a good football player. Pressure lets our kids learn and keeps the mistake to yardage instead of a touchdown. I personally feel confident about the defense. I am noted as a dreamer but there is quality back there. One freshman deep back went to defense from quarterback in the Ohio All-Star game, looked great and is impressing our coaches. Charles Miller. Corso recruits quarterbacks, as did his predecessors. This idea is paying off. Bobby Nelson, Indiana all-stater from Evansville and Whitaker from Illinois switched to deep backs late in the season and came like gang busters. Other deep back speedster do include Rod Lawson, tabbed as great, Gary Powell a track star with a 9.6 hundred on the electric clock and Courtney Snyder could shift to there. He was tabbed the “Big Otis Armstrong” with size and speed. Walkon Doug Gordon looks impressive along with several others — and then Quinn Buckner?
