ISTHECHURCH PART I OF YOUR LIFE? | Aot Jar Jroat Jtain Street Just for a minute, think about the local places you Sunday Wednesday have loved ... the old swimming hole, the town park, I Peter Psalms the walk by the river, the view from the hill—your church! 5.-6-11 91:1-16 Life would be so much less without them; yet we tend Monday Thursday to take them for granted. p sa i ms i saia h What a beautiful world God has created for us! How 37:1-7 41H 0-13 much He must love us to have given us shaded valleys and sparkling waters! He planned for us the constant Tuesday Friday variety of the changing seasons. THE MAIL-JOURNAL James Hibschman tell of work in the Philippines Mr. and Mrs. James Hibschman of Findlay, Ohio, missionaries on furlough from the Philippines were at the Syracuse Church of God recently and told of their experiences. Hibschman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Hibschman of Syracuse. Mrs. Hibschman said the hardest thing was to leave home. They wefe very homesick the first year with no one to ask for help but the Lord. For three and a half years they taught at Kings college which is four years of high school and four years of college. The school has its own camp program in the mountain area. To get to the school they hiked through kneedeep mud for three and a half hours. 5 The last months were spent at Reconciliation in Zamboanga. It is an evangelistic . concept designed to create a Godawareness in the whole city through impactful Gospel programs conducted in areas where most people usually convene, such as the plazas, market places, parking areas, recreation centers and interior communities. Reconciliation is not a church or a denomination, but a joint, evangelistic outreach brought about by concerned believers in Christ whose obsession is for the untold masses to be reconciled to God. Its Biblical basis is found in II Corinthians 5:14-21. Dr. George Strohm, now a Syracuse resident, served as a missionary for several years in Zamboanga. Because of her background in music, Mrs. Hibschman was able to help in this area. She worked with a group called the Gospelaires. While watching a picture of them during a slide program the congregation of the Syracuse church also listened to the group singing byway, of a recorder. Mrs. Hibschman talked of the life of a missionary wife. She had housemaids who ironed, washed dishes, shined floors, etc. She did her own cooking. The laundry was done by hand in the Philippines unless they have a wringer washer. The Hibschman’s young son, John Ward, wears about three or four outfits a day because of the humidity. There are no windows to wash as there are only screens. They buy hunks of meat, grind their own hamburger and make their own buns. Mrs. Hibschman said that one day she might be hiking in the mud and the next day she would be in an evening gown, having “dinner with the governor. A missionary wife entertains, many times unexpectedly, because of missionaries passing through. The temperature is at least 90 degrees, and the day they arrived it was 104 degrees. When they got to the airport, there was no more milk or water in the baby bottles. There are parasites and amoeba in the water there, so Johnny had to be given coke. There are two and a half inch cockroaches and the people must sleep under mosquito nets. The rich are rich and the poor are poor. There are some very highly educated Filipinos. There are 200 tribes and languages. The first graduation the Hibschmans attended at the college, she was the emcee. A student gives a seven minute speech, called a tula (pronounced tulo). However, being new to the language, Barbara Hibschman said, “We will now have the ‘Tulay.’ There was a good deal of laughter. She later learned that she had said “circumcision.” There is no television. Entertainment is books, games, boat rides and corn roasts. The people are superstitious. They believe that if you wash your hair before going to bed, you will go blind. Also, if an expectant father does not eat what the mother craves, the baby will be deformed. Tetutan is a school which the children of missionaries attend for SIOO a year. Johnny will be enrolled there as a fiPst grader next year. The every day life of the Filipino people is what Americans would call roughing it. But, Barbara says she is happiest there, because she is doing the Lord’s work. However, there is a chance that they will not be allowed to return in April as the island is under martial law. The Hibschmans also have a new baby, Christan Dawn, born June 30. LAKELAND LOCAL Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Haab, Goshen, and Mr. and Mrs. Deloss Weaver, r 1 Syracuse, spent Tuesday in Battle Creek, Mich., where they visited the Kellogg’s plant, Kingman Museum and Kimball home.
