C" ■ TO BE HONORED SUNDAY — The golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Caywood, Sr., of r 1 Syracuse will be celebrated with a reception in their honor on Sunday, Sept. 2, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Warsaw. Serving as hosts for the event will be their son, Roy Caywood, Jr., of r 3 Syracuse and their three granddaughters Mrs. Larry (Sandy) Weisser of Milford, Mrs. Bill (Jackie) Kitson of Ligonier and Chris at home. / In addition to their above family the Caywoods are blessed with three great-grandsons. Roy Orville Caywood and the former Helen Berneice Jones were married September 1,1923 at Saint Joe, Mich., by Rev. Percy Darve of the Congregational church there. Mr. Caywood, a retired farmer and Weatherhead employee, with his wife have resided nearly all their lives within the Lakeland area. All friends and relative*, of the couple are cordially invited to attend.

Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Metzger to celebrate 25th anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Metzger of r 3 Syracuse (Dewart Lake) will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 2, at the home of their son, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Coy, r 4 Goshen. Her fiance is a 1969 graduate of Wawasee and a 1972 graduate of Purdue university. He is employed with Richard R._Neff of Milford as a mason. No wedding date has been set. DENNIS CORY IN HOUSTON Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Cory who lived in Berlin and Marburg, Germany the past four years have been visiting relatives in the Milford area and at West Milton, Ohio. They also visited David Cory at Evansville. They are now residing in Houston, Texas.

In the entomology division which called for at least 75 insects in one box and one educational box to be a participant Becky Fenstermaker of r 1 Kendallville was a red ribbon winner. ATTEND STATE FAIR AT INDIANAPOLIS Mrs. Charles Smoker of Warsaw, Denae Berkeypile and Mrs. Hazel Kline of Milford attended the state fair at Indianapolis one day last week.

200 attend flower show at Wawasee last Thursday

A total of more than 200 people viewed the flower show “Bloomin’ Holidays,” Thursday presented by the SyracuseWawasee Garden club. The show was held at Wawasee high school with the theme depicting the various holidays celebrated throughout the year. In the artistic division, National Council of State Gardens Clubs, Inc., awards and blue ribbons were presented to the following: Mrs. Max Brower, the creativity award for her Mother’s Day arrangement; Mrs. Harry Appenzeller, the Tri-Color award for her Christmas table; Mrs. Gale Chapman, the award of distinction for het Colonial Williamsburg style Washington’s birthday arrangement of dried flowers. The sweepstakes award was presented to Mrs. R. C. Tytler who received the most points in the artistic division. Syracuse-Wawasee Garden club awards were presented as follows-: Mrs. R. C. Tytler, the “Bloomin’ Holidays” award for her Christmas arrangement featuring the Madonna and using evergreens and dried green zinnias. Runner-up was Max Brower with his Father’s Day arrangement. Mrs. Tytler also won the Haleene Reynolds Memorial award for her blue ribbon winner in the Easter class of the miniature design section. She used a small church window as background with an arrangement of dried tamarix blossoms and marigolds. The miniatures have a dimensional size of inches or less over-all. By popular vote the president’s trophy was presented to Mrs. Max Brower for her Mother’s Day arrangement of dried flowers. Other blue ribbon winners in the artistic division were Mrs. Donald Robbins and Mrs. Edward Burns of Cromwell, Mrs. Ernest Bushong and Mrs. W. H. Brake of Syracuse. In the horticulture division National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc., awards were given as follows: The arboreal award to Mrs. Donald Robbins of Cromwell; the award of merit and the horticultural sweepstakes award to Mrs. Ralph Clingaman of Syracuse; and the award of horticultural excellence for her display of qrchids went to Miss Irene Abts. Other club members receiving blue ribbons in this section were Mrs. R. C. Tytler, Mrs. Max Brower, Mrs. Harry Appenzeller and Mrs. W. H. Brake, Syracuse; and Mrs. Gale Chapman, Milford. Non-club members receiving awards were Mrs. Robert Laudeman, Charles Hayette and B. Wysong, Syracuse; and Mrs. Everett Baker and Mrs. Alexander Iwankowitsch, Cromwell. School Division In the junior and high school division there were 13 entries. The junior achievement award was presented to Ren Wallace of Cromwell for his Halloween arrangement. Other blue ribbon winners were John and Kevin Atkinson, Kentland; Ranell and Robbin Wallace, Cromwell. Mrs. Ralph Clingaman won the Susie Tytler trophy given to the club member receiving the most blue ribbons in the show. Mrs. Ernest Bushong won the educational award for her exhibit on the art of flower drying. There were a total of 66 entries in the artistic design section, 113 in the horticulture section and 13 in the junior and senior high

Lois Shupp of Goshen were married in the First Brethren church in Goshen by Rev. Willis Ronk on September 12,1948. They have one daughter, Kathy; and one son, Michael, at home. They also have one grandson and one granddaughter. Janie Knapp honored at bridal shower Janie Knapp of Morton, 111., was honored with a bridal shower Saturday evening, Aug. 18, at the Apostolic Christian church fellowship hall in Milford. Hostesses for the event were Mrs. Joe Beer, Mrs. Ned Speicher, Mrs. Don Hoover, Mrs. Carlton Beer, Mrs. Levi Beer and Mrs. Elmer Hartter. Miss Knapp’s colors of lavender and white were carried through an umbrella shower theme. About 55 guests were present to make it a delightful evening.

Janie is the bride-elect of Philip Price, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Price, Sr., Milford Mary Hughes, David A. Cory are engaged Mr. and Mrs. Miller F. Hughes of Evansville are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Mary, to David. A. Cory. David’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Neal Cory of r 1 Milford. Miss Hughes graduated in 1970 from Harrison high school in Evansville and attended the University of Evansville. She is now working at MEDCO center in Evansville. Her fiance graduated from Wawasee high school in 1971. He is working at Deaconess hospital and attending the University of Evansville. The wedding will be at the Methodist Temple Chapel in Evansville on September 22.

MRS. LILLIAN CUSTER CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY Mrs. Lillian Custer of Leesburg celebrated her 79th birthday August 28. Edwin Cable home from boy's school Edwin Cable, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cable, r 2 box 34 Syracuse, has returned * home from Indianapolis where he attended the Indiana Boys’ State Fair school. The school started Wednesday, Aug. 15, and ended with the annual “Caps” banquet Thursday, Aug. 23. Edwin has been selected, along with two other boys from other parts of the state, to return next year as a counselor. Crusaders class meets Friday The Crusaders class of the Syracuse Church of God met Friday, Aug. 24, at the church. Devotions were given by Gary Firestone. He gave a reading entitled “Prayer Choice and Prayer Conflict.” President Jerry Stutzman conducted the business meeting. The class discussed forming a ways and means committee, but a decision was tabled until a later date. The president read a thank you from the family of Mabel Weaver. The secretary, Mrs. Steve (Mary Ann) Stine, called the roll. Each member answered by giving his favorite food. Also, each member payed one cent for each year of his or her age. The meeting was adjourned and Mrs. Gary Firestone closed with prayer. Refreshments were served to the 15 present. No ohe at meeting No one showed up to oppose the proposed expenditure of $15,000 when a public hearing was held last night (Tuesday) in the office of Turkey Creek township trustee Joe Shewmon, according to Shewmon. The money is to be used for the Lakeland day care center.
