Summer ends, events recalled . . .

It has been a very short and very busy summer for the people of the Lakeland area — many have memories of the happy days that have passed during the last 13 weeks. A few of those memories are recalled here in photos taken by Mail-Journal photographers. Mark Spitz, Olympic swimming champion, is interviewed while at the Mermaid Festival in North Webster. He was named the first King of Sports. Kevin Coy of Syracuse exhibits the champion barrow at the county fait for the second straight year. These ladies are members of the SyracuseWawasee Garden club and worked hard to [resent the club’s annual flower show last Thursday. Fireworks on the fourth of July. Connie Hoopingamer of Syracuse was the 1973 county fair 4-H queen. A fishing contest on Waubee Lake. Kim Cripe, a 1973 graduate of Wawasee high school, was chosen most valuable player in the annual north-south game. Any piece of cardboard will do for a sign when it’s garage sale time. Everyone golfs All three towns held successful baseball seasons for the younger set. Everyone enjoys a parade. Time out to give blood to help a fellow human. A very successful bloodmobile visit was held in Milford in July. What’s a summer without swimmers? The libraries were not empty this summer with successful reading programs completed at both Milford and Syracuse.
