Traviolia promises lots of excitement in football
Hal Traviolia, the new football coach at Wawasee high school, is looking forward to Friday night when he can try the wings of his Warriors in the Jamboree to be held at North Wood high school’s big field. It will be a case of Wawasee and Plymouth against Lakeland and North Wood, with the combined scores producing the Jamboree winner. ‘We’re Optimistic’ Ever since coming to Wawasee high school, coach Traviolia has been sounding the note of optimism. He recently told local Rotarians he was looking for a good season, and he said on the practice field Tuesday morning, under a scorching sun, “We’re very optimistic.” As tall Traviolia took time out from shouting commands like an old time line sergeant in any man’s good army, he told a MailJournal reporter, “We like to run a wide open offense. We promise lots of excitement one way or another. Our boys are adjusting well to our style of offense, and we’ll be ready for that Jamboree Friday night.” First Game The first game of the scheduled season is to be played at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at West Noble school, the only daytime game of the year. Reason for the daytime play, is because lights have not been installed as yet at West Noble.

The card calls for five home games, with five away. “We’ll do our darndest to improve on last year’s record, which was five and five,” the confident Traviolia said. Traviolia also gave high marks for Wawasee high school and the Lakeland area. “This school is beautiful,” he exuded. He added, “I’ve been on all the fields in Lake county and none have better playing facilities than right here at Wawasee. “We’d like to see a big fan turnout this year and maybe we can even add to these facilities,” he went on. In Class AA Wawasee’s football team will be competing in state play-offs for the first time this year in class AA, competing against 20 other schools for one spot. There are A-AA-AAA categories with four districts in each class. One school represents each class, with Wawasee representing district 1. Coach Traviolia has 13 returning lettermen to count on for this season’s play: Bryan Lemberg, Rick Brannock, Doug Brown, Mike Vanlaningham, Rick Dahlstrom, Doug Brown, Chad Singerey, Chris Paulus, Bruce Korenstra, Gary Francis, Mark Reiff, Dave Wollman, Dan Miller and Mark Smith. On the minus side is the loss of big Jim Thwaits (6’ 3”, 215 lbs.) who went to Fairfield this year. New coaches joining Traviolia
this fall include Tony Clouse, Walter Lunsford and Dave Matz, with old reliables Jack Marlette and George Vietaniemi returning. One comes away from talking to coach Traviolia with the impression that, if it can be done on the playing field this year, here’s the man to pull it off. He doesn’t like to see his boys walk on the playing field. They run, or they are on the receiving end of one of those blistering commands that promise to keep the Warriors a step ahead of their competition all year.
