Ourhobby for this week is one thathas been a long-time faverite of many persons in the Lakeland area. Everywhere you look you can see people growing things. Growing flowers is something that almost everyone can do — Youngsters enjoy watching the seeds mature and become flowers while their parents and grandparents enjoy working with the good earth. You can plant a few seeds in a small pot, use a window box, plant a small flower bed or make an elaborate and formal garden — it all depends upon how much space is available, how much time the gardner has to work with his flowers and how much money he has or wants to spend. Nothing delights the eye more
'Man of La Mancha' Winds up successful season
By BILL SPURGEON Miguel de Cervantes’ knight errant Don Quixote conquered opening week audiences at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse last week and the Thunder Bay Players’ production of “Man of La Mancha” is certainly a successful show to wind up a successful season of summer theater. Jon Baisch, who owned the Enchanted Hills Playhouse for the first five years of its existence, returned to his old haunts to direct the show and it was a worthwhile expedition. Baisch, now of Mason, Mich., put together a production that moved well and kept the audience enthralled — and this is no mean chore when you consider that the two-hour-long play has no intermission. The reason 120 minutes passed so swiftly on opening night was twofold — Keith Titus, another Michigander who was at Enchanted Hills last in 1964, was a

than those first few jonquils, tulips, violets and other blooms of early spring. Flowers bloom thru summer and into the fall, the variety changing with the seasons. If you have never worked with flowers before why not plan now to plant just one package of seeds next spring and watch them grow and become things of beauty. You really don’t have to have a “green thumb” to be successful at growing flowers. All you need is a few instructions on how deep to plant a flower, when to plant it where to plant it and then give it water and plenty of tender loving care. remarkable Don QuixoteCervantes, and Enchanted Hills managing director Douglas Stark was the best Sancho (the manservant) we’ve seen in three different productions of the play. Jeanne Krempp of the local company did a solid job of playing Aldonza and it’s tough for a pretty young woman like Miss Krempp to metamorphose into a scullery hand. Solid supporting roles were filled by Mike McVey, Mark Carmichael, Rick Gossett, Joe Yoder and Cheryl Wilson. Technical director Dan Warrick should be complimented on the staging, authentic even to the suspended staircase that leads into the dungeon from top backstage. And the musicians topped it off, playing a difficult score without a hitch under the directorship of Jack Titcomb. “Man of La Mancha” may be a somber show in itself, but it is excellent theater. Enchanted Hills more than does it justice.

The Syracuse Public Library was a busy place on Wednesday, Aug. 15. The summer reading club ended and 173 adults and children were served refreshments during the afternoon. Helping the librarians with the serving were Sally Coy, Rhonda Byrd, Lisa Meek and Denise Bjella. A total of 224 children received ribbons for reading one book or more, and 185 received ribbons and reading certificates for reading ten or more books. A total of 5,152 books were read for the book club stickers during the ten week period. The librarians wish to thank all the children for making this one of the most enjoyable book clubs and we hope you will all continue with your reading and be back to join us again next year. The library has been the recipient of many kind donations this summer. The library received a beautiful Wedgewood Commemorative plate from the Wednesday Afternoon club, which was presented by Katherine Rothenberger. This is the first plate in a series of four issued as an official United States of America Bicentennial Commemorative Project of the General Federation of Women’s club. The first plate depicts Patrick Henry’s famous speech, “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death.” Another gift to the library are two eye catching
