Thursday golfers in the dining room of South Shore golf club were surprised and pleased to be introduced to two of the world’s best known auto racers, in the person of Gary Bettenhausen and Billy Vukovich. The two personable young men were in the area by invitation of the Vega Corp., and had hoped to get in some fishing and golf. Fishing, no, due to the rain; but golf, yes, and some fans gathered around the first tee-off to see the racers let loose on some real long drives. Vega big-wigs put together a luncheon for some friends they wanted to meet the racers. Bettenhausen, no newcomer to the area, was here in October to pick up his Vega Mini-Home. Since then he has driven the unit

to 40 races and has 15,000 miles on it. For the record: Vukovich came in second in this year's ill-fated Indy 500, while Bettenhausen came in fifth. And Vukovich is third in point standing with the U.S. Auto Club. Two full-grown Drake ducks waddled across South Huntington street, near the bridge, Friday afternoon, slowing traffic appreciably. The Ralph Thornburgs, in Boston last week attending a national pharmaceutical convention, took time out to make an enjoyable auto tour up the New England coast. An average single family dwelling is considered a house with 1249 square feet, attached garage, basement and some masonry. From 1964 to 1972 cost for constructing such a dwelling has gone up 49 per cent, and this figure went up another six per cent since June 30, 1973, according to figures sent this column. In several counties in Indiana this cost increase was only 43 per
cent, but in Lake county it jumped 62 per cent. Enchanted Hills Playhouse enjoyed a sell-out for Camelot this week, according to publicist Bob Zehr. The play was hailed as one of the finest ever produced here. Word this week is that The Guide, eating house and watering hole on the east side of Lake Wawasee, is under new management, with Ray and Lou Ann Yoder, Frog Tavern owners, in charge. See ad elsewhere. Those in charge of occupancy for the new Pickwick Block in Syracuse pulled off a real coup when they signed up Phil Oppenheim of North Manchester to occupy the Huntington street unit. The Oppenheims are well established North Manchester merchants and are real assets wherever they locate. Phil is a [rime mover behind the success of Enchanted Hills. We can always expect a nice note from Dale and Faye Sprague (8781 Dewey Dr., Garden Grove, Calif. 92641) when they renew their M-J subscription.
Dale writes: “Since your rate has been raised I suppose I’ll have to send my old copes to my friend Les Leman in Sunnyside.” “1 am still enjoying the current events you print even tho I am now some 12 years removed from the area. 1 am especially in- - terested in the hassel down in my old neighborhood." Ev Ganz is said to be in possession of the most unique calling card. A number of Syracuse women are interested in starting a Day Care Center October 1 at Calvary EUB church and they are testing the winds to see what local interest there is in the center. Principals include Pat Bitner and Mrs. Steve Hearn in what will be Lakeland Community Services, with Harlan Steffen as chairman. If you're interested call any of these numbers: 457-3802,457-3263, 457-3778, or (evenings) 856-4112 or 457-3860. A Syracuse merchant walked into Pilcher Shoes one day last week and displayed a pair of well worn shoes, with the thought in mind that he ought to buy a new pair. “Any trade-in allowance on these?” he asked. Whereupon clerk Steve Butts said, “Well, I’d have to say the trade in value would be slim to none.” With all the talk that the town of Syracuse would do well to hire a town manager, one Indiana town has done just that. Carmel, the burgeoning community just north of Indianapolis, has hired its clerktreasurer as town manager at a reported salary of $15,000 per year. His clerk-treasurer salary was $9,000. Think about it. The laundromat in a neighboring town did a landslide business one day last week when a lady walked in with laundry for 300 people. Investigation revealed the lady is with a group from Chicago that is conducting an experiment in commune living. They were at Pioneer Trails at the time and her assignment for the day was the washing.

Steve Finton, who is retiring from NIPSCo after 44 years on the job, is a compulsive fisherman and early morning walker. He loves to fish, making excursions into northern Michigan with fishing pal John Sudlow to the Sudlow island cottage. Early risers see Steve taking his two mile constitutional around the area each morning. He is also an avid gardener. Steve went with NIPSCo when he was 21, in 1928, and is going into a well deserved retirement. Gunman robs Leesburg employee A lone gunman, using an old long-barrel 22 caliber revolver, robbed the Burger Dairy Store on East Winona Ave., Warsaw, of an estimated $289.84 Saturday night at approximately 9:30. Jo Phillips, 23, Leesburg, was working alone in the store at the time. Miss Phillips told Warsaw city police that the robber was short, blonde haired, stood about 5’6”, had whiskers and was wearing a yellow shirt and blue jeans. She stated he walked into the store, pointed the gun at her ami told her to put the money in a sack. After doing so, he told her to go to a back room and wait while he fled out the front door. Police are not sure how he made his get-away. Mrs. Wallace /bobbins, manager of the store, arrived just as Miss Phillips was calling police. She said she must have come in the back door the same time the man ran out the front. Mrs. Robbins stated she usually arrived at the store at around9:2o every evening to lock up but was delayed this night. This is the second robbery this year the store has had. There were no customers in the store at the time but two entered soon after. City units were immediately assisted by county and state police. Ironically, Saturday was Miss Phillips last day on the job as she left immediately for a two-week vacation.

Running Backs 1973, from the grandstand would seem to be some toughies but I think we need a little more depth, probably only in the big fullback slot. Corso runs double running back but when the power is needed uses the I and this means some good strength. St. Perre more than qualifies, Mark Zellmer is tough and steady and back of them is a sophomore named Huzvar from Pennsylvania football country. Tough as I see Zellmer, and he had a good spring, it seems to be we will need another big one there. Kenn Starling is being touted as an All-everything and could be that. He is strong, fast starter, quick and blocks well but he has had few complete- breakaway runs although he ranks as one of our top ground gainers in history. He is backed by Dennis Cremeens who has an exceptional talent for staying on his feet and finding the wee small opening. He is hard to bring down and impressed a lot of people last year. Joel Kirby is green and a sophomore but he is bigger and fast. He ran the long T.D. in the spring game and I think had the extra step to get loose that none

of the others had. He was a high school All-American in Urbana, Illinois and though now rated number three may be hard to keep out as the season goes along. Jon DeCamilla is ranked third as a fullback. He came to school highly touged known as a pointing but showed improvement in the spring. Dennis Green is a J. C. boy trying to get eligible. He was J. C. All-American. He has the good attitude and I figure will make the grades to get eligible. Freshman Kirk Edwards is still a freshman. He did not get to play as a high school senior as he was at Gary West but has great speed and though known as a defense man time will only tell. Florida All-Stater and a freshman is Reggie Holmes. Tall and big at 210 pounds. He is untested but has a reputation as a runner. Then there are some frosh quarterbacks and some others on the squad who have a chance to help in case of injury. Bob Paar is a strong defensive player but could be-moved. Neil Hayes is a flanker but ran well in J.V. games last year. MARINES LAND On July 28, 1915, U.S. Marines landed in Haiti to combat a series of coups.
