MILFORD MERCHANTS MAKE PURCHASE — Several businessmen for the Milford community joined together last year to purchase the reserve champion steer from Laura Tucker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Tucker of Milford. “Blake,” a 990 pound Angus, sold for 75 cents per pound. competition began officially in 1873. The grand circuit thus entered the sports world before baseball had its first professional league or work! series, before basketball and the American brand of football were invented, and before the triple crown of thoroughbred racing was conceived. It was the first serious attempt by sportsmen to form a federation of tracks to avoid scheduling conflicts and other-
wise further a sport that had captivated rural audiences. In its 102 years the grand circuit has survived depressions, wars and crusades against wagering. It is a traveling showcase of harness racing, including in its roster all the stakes and classics most meaningful to owners, breeders and trainers. It enjoys the patronage of tracks and racing followers from coast to coast. The grand circuit first came to two Indiana cities, Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, in 1896. Grand circuit horses returned to Fort Wayne in 1897 and 1898 but the 1896 visit to Indianapolis was the last for the “Grand” until 1911, when it returned for another single year. Indianapolis became a regular grand circuit stop in 1926. There

was a one-year gap in 1940 and a three-year gap from 1943 through 1945, when the Indiana State Fairgrounds was taken over by the armed forces. Grand circuit horses visited Terre Haute in 1944 and 1945. Since 1946 there has been only (Mie interruption in the annual pilgrimage of the grand circuit stars to the lightening-fast Indianapolis mile track. That was in 1954, when the entire program was rained out. Premier race at Indianapolis each year is the fox stake for two-year-old pacers, considered Jby horsemen the most prestigious in the world for horses of that age and gait.
