Thieves take $ 550 in break-in at Syracuse Legion
Thieves entered the American Legion hall at 114 South Huntington street, Syracuse, some time during the night last Thursday, according to Syracuse police, abscounding with $550 in cash.

The break-in was reported by Libby Rookstool, manager of the Legion, at 3:42 p.m. Friday when she reported for work. Mrs. Rookstool said she found the front door broken open, and the door at the bar room also
broken open. The money was taken from the cash register and from a strong box beneath the register. Syracuse police officer Dale Sparklin investigated. Seven have licenses suspended A. total of seven persons have had their driver’s licenses
suspended according to the latest report from the state department of motor vehicles. Those seven are as follows: Dave E. Brown, 413 W. Market, Warsaw, from May 4 to November 11, 1973, for leaving the scene of an accident ; Dale K. Dinneen, r 4 Warsaw, from April 27 to June 27; Stephan P. Ellis, 416 N. ONE YEAR AGO The proposed budget for Turkey Creek township shows an increase in the total tax levy of 5 cents over the current rate. The proposed rate is 23 cents while the current rate is 18 cents. Scout Troop 28 of Syracuse held Court of Honor last Thursday at the scout cabin. The “Sounds of Hope” under the baton of Varner M. Chance and Vernon Stinebaugh, climaxed its European tour with a rousing concert last night at the Wawasee high school auditorium. Miss Jeannine Amos, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Amos of Syracuse, has been selected by the University of Pittsburg as one of 23 students to study next semester at the University of Rouen, France. The Calvary United Methodist church, south of Syracuse, was the setting for the afternoon wedding uniting in marriage Miss Sheryl Raye Butler of Syracuse and Daniel Fuller Brown of Milford. FIVE YEARS AGO The board of school trustees of the Lakeland Community School corporation have appointed William Dorsey to the position of principal for the Syracuse junior high school for the 1968-69 school year. He replaces Robert Slavens, who resigned to accept a position at Wabash. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Krauter of 107 W. Portland, Syracuse, are the parents of their first child, a son, Jay Linn, born at 9:27 p.m., Saturday, July 27, in the Goshen hospital. Miss Judith Lynne Ridings of Syracuse and specialist 4 Kenneth E. Wagner were united in marriage in the Artillery Bowl chapel at Lawton, Okla. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jackson D. Ridings, Sr., of Syracuse. TEN YEARS AGO Republicans in the town of Syracuse nominated a full slate of candidates for the town board of trustees and for clerktreasurer Tuesday night at the high school cafeteria. Mrs. Lois Schleeter defeated J. Barton Cox. 42-43, in an upset in the clerktreasurer’s race. A recount for that nomination was made, and found to be correct. The Syracuse fire department Sunday, July 28, burned a barn and a shed on the farm of Mrs. Russell Warner, south of Syracuse. Ten buildings, the third to be burned on Mrs. Warner’s farm, were used in a training program for the fire department. Vance Hartke in TWENTY YEARS AGO The Syracuse Girl Scout troop and Mrs. Gerold Kline, leader, will go August 9 to Camp Kil-O-Quah, Mich., for a one-week trip. A recent guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kleinknight was Mrs. Wandilee Andrew of Angola who was here for the week end. FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The cottage on Kale Island belonging to August Swanberg of Goshen was destroyed by fire at 7:30 this morning. The blaze started by the explosion of an oil stove. The cottage next to it, belonging to George Wandell of South Bend, was badly damaged. The Cable family will hold their 20th annual reunion August 12, 1928 at Forrest Park, Lake Wawasee. Mr. and Mrs. Truman Ball and sons, Neff and Daniel of Toledo,, Ohio, spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Snyder. Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Jones and Mrs. Ray Jones of Fort Wayne, and Mr. and M rs. A. E. Jones and two sons of Mishawaka spent Sunday here with their fattier, William Jones. Shirley Allen promoted to rank of ensign NEWPORT, R. I. — Ensign Shirley Allen, daughter of retired army chief warrant officer and Mrs. Douglas J. Allen of r 1 Leesburg was commissioned in her present rank after completing naval indoctrination at the women officers school here. A 1967 graduate of Wurzburg American high school, Wurzburg, Germany and a 1971 graduate of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., she joined the service in March 1973. A Jackson's rate set at 38 cents The rate for Jackson township’s 1974 tax levy has been set at 38 cents. The entire amount is in the general fund and will raise $9,999. The levy is based on $2,631,390 in net taxable property. The advisory board and Lucille Koontz, trustee, will meet on August 28 to consider said budget.
