LEWIS ! | Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc. | After DES - what next? Have we, as a nation, become a little overzealous and mothercoddling in our quest for health safety to allow the banning of DES (diethylstilbestrol) as a feed additive? The banning of the use of both oral (January 1) and implanted (April 25) DES now makes it necessary to use other growth stimulants and other methods of improving gain and efficiency so we can continue producing beef as efficiently in the future as we have in the past. It is estimated that the ban on DES slows down beef production enough to add up to 15 per cent to production costs. As a result farmers have started selling cattle 50 pounds lighter. Lighter cattle means less beef at the marketplace. Less beef means higher price. What this all means is — unless a comparable substitute is found for DES — the cost of producing beef will increase about 3 to 3.5 per cent per pound in the feed lot and 5 to 6 cents a pound at the grocery counter. Even more ironic is the fact that the new law doesn’t apply to medicines and other things people consume. For instance, birth control pills are made from the very stilbestrol that is banned from livestock feeds. Researchers at lowa State university, where stilbestrol was perfected, say a housewife would have to eat several thousands pounds of beef liver to get as much stilbestrol as they consume in a typical birth control pill. Actually the small amount of DES detected in the liver and kidneys of beef cattle is not a human health hazard and DES, according to Dr. W. M. Beeson, Purdue university, never occurs in sufficient amounts to cause cancer in man or animal. than two parts per billion of DES was detected in liver by very sensitive radioactive tracer techniques. At this level (2ppb) a woman would have to eat 26,666 pounds of liver to be equivalent to 24 mg. of DES administered to her as a "morning-after pill.”
