STAMPS 4> Johnson issue readied The basis for the design of the forthcoming Lyndon B. Johnson eight-cent memorial stamp was taken from a portrait by Madame Elizabeth Shoumatoff, said to be LBJ’s favorite rendition of himself. The painting hangs in the White House. First-day ceremonies for the stamp will take place Aug. 27 in the Lyndon B. Johnson Library in Austin, Tx. The date is the 65th anniversary of his birth. The vertical, jumbo stamp shows the capitol in the left background with the president in the right foreground. It will be printed in buff, yellow, red, blue and two blacks on the Andreotti press, using the gravure process. There will be six plate numbers on each pane. The U. S. Postal Service traditionally issues a memorial stamp upon the death of a chief executive. A memorial stamp for President Harry S Truman was issued earlier this year. Liechtenstein: The third in a series of “Landscape” definitives and the first of a series of items from the treasury of the Royal Family have been released by the pocket principality of Liechtenstein in Europe. The third series of landscapes are the works of artist Louis Jager, all illustrating a section of the Tidrufe, an area of Eschen marshland and a nature conservation area. On the 50-rappen is shown the Tidrufe —a stream that becomes a torrent, moving and tearing great quantities of mud and rock during heavy rainfalls; on the 60-rappen, the Eschnerriet —a valley floor with agricultural production; and, on the 70-rap-pen, the Mittagspitz —a typical mountain form at the western end of the NaafkopfFalknis ridge line. The first items selected for portrayal on stamps from the Royal Treasury are three drinking vessels. The three chosen for this stamp series are of particular interest to show the types of drinking and table vessels of the 16th and 17th Centuries. The glittering shell of a great cuttlefish is held by engraved and gold plated silver clasps on the 30-rappen stamp, with a stem in the form of a silver dolphin, and is called the Nautilus Cup. The 70-rappen is an ivory tankard portraying a sleeve of wild sea gods and monsters in dancing, chasing and playing forms, held in gold plated, engraved silver with a richly worked lid on which a boy sits making music. And the 1.10-franc stamp shows a splendid silver wine goblet, exquisitely embossed. ST.
