Mrs. Harry Martin has been collecting salt and pepper shakers since 1941
Mrs. Harry Martin of Milford got her start collecting salt and pepper shakers in April of 1941. Her aunt gave her a set of shakers, small figures of a chef and a cook, which Mrs. Martin still displays in the front of her collection. The aunt then advised her it was time for her to begin collecting something, and so she did. From that small beginning, 32 years ago, Mrs. Martin has built up a collection of 1,802 sets of salt and pepper shakers, at last counting. These do not include the many that are not part of a set. She displays a set or more from each state in the United States, and around a dozen sets from foreign countries. Mrs. Martin’s husband picked up several of these foreign sets for her in Mexico and Europe, years ago, she related. When asked how she managed to collect so many shakers, she replied, “I’ve bought most of them, but many have been given and sent to me.” She went on, “Some of them do have some special significance to me. This set of golden eggs, for

example, was given to me for our golden wedding anniversary last year.” At (Mie time she spent much of her time collecting and arranging the hundreds of shakers on shelves and in trunks. But “I haven’t done much with them lately, I guess,” she went on. Several of the shakers are antiques, Mrs. Martin related. She had a hand holding a cone, not in a set, which she saw selling in a Ligonier antique store for $75. The piece was originally owned by her husband’s grandmother. 1 It was the collecting of the salt and pepper shakers which led Mrs. Martin into a deeper interest in antiques in general. Her home is furnished with many antiques, including Several beautiful, large chandeliers. Some of her older antiques are displayed in an old china cabinet, along with some of the more beautiful pieces from her shaker collection. When asked which shaker or antique piece she liked best, Mrs. Martin, smiling, replied,) “Oh, I couldn’t tell you. I just like them all!”

Indiana's Carter Everage is new international director
Hoosier Lions invaded the Sunshine state of Florida last month and waged a successful campaign to elect Carter Everage of Versailles to the international board of directors of Lions International. The campaign and election took place at the association’s 56th annual convention held in Miami Beach on June 27-30. Some 40,000 persons were in attendance. Numerous Lions and their ladies from all parts of Indiana worked hard throughout the week to insure Everage’s election. Indiana’s official uniform — following the 500 race theme with black and white checkered flags of the winner — was seen throughtout the Miami-Miami Beach area as Lions and ladies campaigned for Everage and attended the various sessions of the convention. A large delegation was on hand Wednesday evening to march in
