A special meeting of the board of school trustees of the Wa-Nee community schools was held at 8:30 p.m. July 2. The primary purpose of this meeting was to install the newly elected board member Robert D. Hepler and to elect board officers for the coming year. After the oath of office was administrated by school board attorney and notary Joseph W. Kindig, Robert D. Hepler, newly elected member from Scott and Jefferson townships, was declared as being a duly installed member of the Wa-Nee community schools’ board of school trustees. Board president Mrs. Margaret Hoffer appointed Superintendent Weddle to serve as chairman until new officers were elected. Dr. Robert Abel as well as other members of the board expressed their appreciation to Mrs. Hoffer for the service and leadership she had given the board over the past three years. Individuals placed in nomination and elected by the board unanimously for the 1973-74 school year were: Charles Stump — president Max Quakenbush — vice president James Graybill — secretary Appointments The board unanimously appointed the following to serve the Wa-Nee community schools for the fiscal year 1973-74: Treasurer — William Dorsey, assistant superintendent-special services Deputy treasurer — Mrs. Inez Rogers, financial secretary School attorney — Joseph W. Kindig was reappointed with the understanding that his fees would be in accordance with legal services rendered and he would file periodic claims for same. The board set the following dates for July meetings: Monday, July 16 — regular meeting Monday, July 30, — regular meeting. Final review of the budget prior to advancement August 8 and 9. . A letter of resignation was accepted with regret from William Wade in which he explained he had enjoyed his teaching position, but desired to enter private business. High school choral director Stanley A. Heckaman submitted a letter requesting a profession leave of absence for the purpose of professional growth for the school year 1973-74. This was approved by the board in accordance with board policy. The board asked a letter be written to Mr. Heckaman expressing appreciation for his many years of service as choir director for North Wood high school and his outstanding professional contribution to students of the WaNee school system. Old Business The superintendent discussed a change involving a proposal for the joint school to jointly purchase the Aux Chandelle facility. The proportionate share for each school to be prorated according to the various school districts’ assessed valuation. By jointly paying for the facility in the immediate future, the* joint schools would be providing the Elkhart County Association for the Retarded with immediate cash to build a facility for their newly proposed adult retarded vocational program and will also make it possible for the joint schools to use cumulative building funds or excess 1973 cash

rather than amortize the debt at a five per cent rate over an extended number of years, which of necessity would be charged to the general fund. The latter method of financing this facility would place a burden on each of the joint schools’ general funds since every school districts’ general fund revenue has been frozen as of 1973. New Business The board unanimously authorized offering new teacher contracts as follows: Dwight Thomas — vocal music, Nappanee middle school < Kathryn Thomas grade, Union Center school Linda Myers — one-half time kindergarten, Union Center school The board unanimously approved a proposal submitted by the superintendent to grant an approximate increase of five per cent plus S2O per month increments for all clerical workers eligible under the present approved salary schedule. Also, approved was a S2O per month increment in the presently approved schedule at the eighth year level of service. The newly approved clerical wage schedule will be itemized and placed on file in the superintendent’s office and a copy placed in the board minute book. The board approved the contracted salary for the financial secretary in the administration office as per board policy which places this secretary at the top of the non-degree teachers’ schedule; and, also approved an additional compensation for the financial secretary in the amount of S3OO for services as board recorder —a responsibility which has no direct relationship to the financial secretary’s responsibility. The following claims were approved for payment: General account $15,573.37 Construction account $28,579.95 Bike club plans ride to Epworth Forest A bike ride to Epworth Forest, North Webster, was planned for Sunday, July 15, when they met recently in Warsaw.
