Bar association supports Landgrebe's judgeship stand WASHINGTON, D. C. - The President-elect of the Indianapolis Bar association has voiced his support of Congressman Earl F. Landgrebe’s stand against the veto power given the American Bar association over appointments of federal judges. In a letter to Landgrebe, Douglass R. Shortridge stated, “While I express neither preference nor opinion with regard to the selection of a federal district judge for the northern district, I would like to go on record criticizing the virtual veto power which the American Bar association apparently now exercises over the

selection of federal judges.” Shortridge suggested alternate means of screening candidates for judgeships, including garnering opinions of local lawyers. “I feel it is appropriate for Congress to inquire of a candidate’s local peers in terms of ability, temperament, and whether or not a judicial candidate is likely to exercise those attributes of restraint and common sense,” Shortridge’s letter continued. “On the other hand,” the letter concluded, “I feel very strongly that the American Bar association is not the appropriate organization or channel which should be used in order to inquire as to a candidate’s fitness.” The dispute arose after Landgrebe had submitted the name of Porter circuit court judge Alfred Pivarnik for the position of federal judge for the northern district of Indiana, replacing the retiring Judge Robert Grant of South Bend. The second district representative has asked President Nixon to put a hold on the appointment until the A.B.A is ready to disclose its reasons for selecting the eventual appointee, something the Bar association has been reluctant to do since it was rumored that Judge Allan Sharp of Williamsport would receive the appointment. Landgrebe takes issue with use of off-road vehicles Indiana’s Second District Congressman Earl F. Landgrebe today announced his opposition to the use of off-road vehicles in the Hoosier National forest. The Forest Environmental statement of March suggested the possibility of allowing the offroad vehicles in the Hoosier National forest. Landgrebe stated that he is opposed to the use of the vehicles, “not only because of the financial cost involved in developing and constantly repairing the areas, but also because of what it would cost our environment. These vehicles would disrupt recreation and forestry uses. The noise and motor fumes might affect the population of some of our national wildlife. There is a great possibility that a permanent deterioration in wildlife quality, and ecological imbalance would occur”. LAKELAND LOCAL Mr. and Mrs. Merle Tethrake and sons, Michael, Steven and Douglas of Milford plan to leave July 6 for a one week camping trip. They will visit Spring Mill State park in southern Indiana.
