Buddy tournament at Maxwelton
Last Saturday a Buddy tournament was the play of the day at Maxwelton. Winners were for low gross first place Luther Adkins and Fred Hockert with 68. First place winners tied for low net were Manny Slabaugh and Walt Longfield, and Bob Lantz and Bill Yahne.’ Second place tie for low gross went to the teams of Pat Speicher and* Dave Hockert, and John Hossinger and Walt Hagerdon both with 70. Little League in action at Syracuse Teams belonging to the Syracuse Little League played seven games this past week. In major league action, the Lions topped the Bank by a score of 9 to 6. Pilchers stomped the Rotary 11 to 4. Top hitter in the major league is Jim Becker with a .611 average. Shawn Stevenson is batting second with .473. Third is Dave Johnson with .444, with Jeff Beezly a close fourth with .416. In fifth position is Rick Swartz, batting .384. Major league standings are: Rotary 3-3; Bank 3-2; Pilchers 23; and Lions 2-3. The Lions tromped Pilchers in minor league action by a score of 17 to 5. In another game the Rotary topped the Bank 20 to 13. Mike Davis leads batters in the minors with a remarkable .833 average. An .800 average was turned in for the second spot by Scott Slough. Jim Cannon is the third hitter with a* .600, and Darrel Grisamer follows with a .571. Pat Morganthaler is the fifth batter with a .500 average. Standings in the minor league are as follows: Rotary 4-0; Lions 3-1; Bank 1-3; and Pilchers 0-4. In T-ball action Love Furniture beat Thornburgs by a score of 16 to 12. Klinks Grocery also topped Thornburgs by a whopping 30 to 12. Tom Socks downed Love Furniture with a score of 19 to 10. T-ball standings are: Klinks 30; Socks 2-1; Love 2-2; and Thornburgs 0-4. The major league schedule for next week includes three games. In action Friday, July 6, the Lions will meet Pilchers at 4 p.m. and the Rotary will take on the Bank at 6 p.m. July 9, will match the Rotary* with Pilchers. The minor league has only two games scheduled this week. The Lions will take on the Bank at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jyly 5, and the Bank will return to meet Pilchers Tuesday, July 10, at 6 p.m. Klinks will play against Love Furniture at 10 a.m., Friday, July 6, in T-ball action this week. A game matching Thornburgs and Tom Socks will follow kt 11 a.m. In action Wednesday, July 11, Love Furniture will play Thornburgs at 6 p.m. and Tom Socks will meet Klinks at 7 p.m. Pickwick concludes grand opening week Vore Cinema Corporation’s Pickwick threatre in Syracuse concluded its grand opening week Tuesday, June 26. The grand opening was held to celebrate the complete refurbishing of the Pickwick. Tim Yeager, manager of the theatre, announced the names of winners of the grand opening frizes as follows: Winner of the first prize — $25 U.S. Savings Bond, Mary Zerkel, 729 S. Town board member has minor accident * In a minor accident Wednesday evening, June 27, Noble Blocker, 301 S. Lake street, Syracuse, backed his car into the side of the Syracuse police car. The mishap occurred in the parking lot behind the police station. Blocker, a town board member, had been attending a meeting at the town hall to discuss next year’s budget when the accident happened. Damage to the police car was set at SIOO.
Rochester wins over Wawasee swimmers
The Wawasee Swim club’s first conference meet ended in a close loss to the Rochester Swim club Saturday, June 30. The filial score in the meet was Rochester 243, Wawasee 229. Wawasee swimmers broke 39 of 76 club records. The meet marked the first canpetition in the newly formed North Central Lakes Swim conference. Rochester, Goshen, Manchester and Wawasee make up the conference. ONE YEAR AGO For the third year in a row, Boat-In Worship services are being held in Syracuse, with the first service held last Sunday. Wawasee high school athletic director Eldon Ummel and principal Henry Smith are the recipients of S7OO presented by former star athletes Jeff Hughes and Tom Fribley. Both boys, well known Wawasee athletes who graduated this year, participated in the Mermaid Festival Tournament of Knights, matching athletic skills with individuals from surrounding communities. The Fellowship class of the Syracuse Church of God met Tuesday night at the home of Mrs. Vivian Priddy, with Mrs. Walter Williams opening the meeting by scripture of Timothy 1-6. A dinner was held last week for Miss Kellie Coy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward T. Coy, Jr., of Highland, in honor of her first birthdays The dinner was held in the Richard Coy home in Syracuse. y FIVE YEARS AGO Senator Birch E. Bayh will be this year’s grand marshal of the Mermaid Festival parade, set for Saturday, June 29, at 4 p.m. Are the rains over? Since Sunday noon the Lakeland area has received from seven to eight inches of rain as the result of a tropical storm named Candy, which moved across the northern part of the state. The American Power Boat association boat races, held Saturday, June 15, drew a crowd to the Syracuse city park. There were 96 boats entered. Two Syracuse men won top honors in the event. TWENTY YEARS AGO Donald Vanderyeer of Milford was elected as president of State Bank of Syracuse, being the third president since the reorganization of the bank in 1934. Charles Purdum, Sr., and Ralph E. Thornburg preceded him as president. The town board of trustees has passed an ordinance requiring the B and O railroad to install and use an automatic flasher light warning signal to announce the approach of trains from both the east and the west at the crossing east of the railroad company station here. FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The seventh annual reunion of the descendants of Henry and Elizabeth Snyder was held at the cottage of Mrs. Clarence Snyder on Syracuse Lake.
