ONE YEAR AGO Dr. Jack Clark of Syracuse, scheduled to deliver a medical special at a seminar in Rapid City, S. D., was stranded there during the disastrous flash flood, and assisted in rescue operations, according to an announcement received here in Syracuse. Lakeside post 1342 of the VFW in Syracuse was honored at the department convention in Indianapolis over the week end for having exceeded its membership quota. Bitzer, Sunday, June 9, with a dinner. He has been sent to Concord United Methodist church near Milford. Marta Juday, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Juday, r 3 Syracuse, was named 1968 Flotilla queen. She spent last winter attending school in Hawaii. Members of the Syracuse Sox team, with a 2-0 record, are currently leading the Lakeland junior high school summer league. The Sox downed North Webster in nine innings last Tuesday to keep their undefeated record. Airman Sam Whiteman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Whiteman of Syracuse, is home on leave from his base in Louisiana. Wedding vows were exchanged Saturday, June 15, at 3 p.m. in the Calvary United Methodist church in Syracuse, by Miss Lois Hershberger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hershberger, r 3 Syracuse, and Harris N. Lindenfield of Charlottesville, Va., son of Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Lindenfield of Saint Joseph, Mich. TEN YEARS AGO Edgar A. Speer, Syracuse elementary school principal and elementary coordinator for the Lakeland Community School Corporation, has announced that plans fa* starting schooloperated kindergartens in Leesburg, Milford and North Webster are progressing nicely. Melvin D. Fuller has joined the staff at the State Bank of Syracuse recently. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Stiffler of Syracuse entertained with a family dinner for Mr. Stiffler’s father, Chester Stiffler, ahd Mrs. Agnes Causer, who was a guest of honor. T
Tom Martin, r 2 Syracuse, is among Indiana university students who will be counselors at lU’s annual freshman camp, September 6-8 at Rivervale park near Mitchell. Mrs. Harold Gray and Mrs. Karl McGarvey of Syracuse entertained a group of ladies at the Tippecanoe Lake Country club Tuesday forenoon at 11 a.m. TWENTY YEARS AGO With the reading of the appointments at the concluding service of the northern Indiana annual conference, Rev. W. Noble Greene was assigned to the Methodist church in Syracuse. The marriage of Miss Lucy Bachman, daughter of Charles C. Bachman, Sr., of Syracuse, and Keith Kern, son of Harry E. Kern of Indianapolis, was solemnized in the Christian church in Madison, Wis., at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 14. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Popenfoose have traded their property on the corner of Washington and Lake streets to Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Byland for their farm buildings and 20 acres of their farm, south of Syracuse. The Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary club met Monday noon for the weekly meeting. President James Kirkwood, just back from the International Rotary convention in Paris, France, was in charge of the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jewett and son of Toledo, Ohio, are guests this week of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Laird of Syracuse. FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The poultry play, “The Lay of a Hen,” presented Monday night in the library by R. S. Lingard of the Purina Mills and Lloyd and O. T. Disher of the Syracuse Feed Mill was exceptionally well received. Everett R. Darr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Darr of Syracuse, and Alta Coy of Milford, were married Saturday, June 16, at the courthouse in Warsaw. Rev. J. T. Bean of the Methodist church of Warsaw officiated. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Blake returned home to Syracuse Friday after spending two, days with Mr. and Mrs. 0. L. Cleveland of Columbia City. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bushong returned home last Thursday from Santo Domingo City where they spent several weeks visiting her parents. They motored home from New York city. Mrs. Warbel’s Sunday school class met at the home of Mrs. George Bailey Monday afternoon for their monthly meeting.
