Chances for double cropping wheat and soybeans this year

There may be a chance of double cropping wheat and soybeans this year in some fields where the wheat will be ready to harvest by the end of June, says Don Frantz, Kosciusko county extension agent. Conditions have to be right and moisture at planting time needs to be adequate to get quick germination with at least normal July and August rainfall. It probably would be advisable to consider combining wheat at 20 per cent moisture and drying it in order to gain a few days time. Hie straw would have to be shredded either with a combine shredder or with a rotary chopper set at 8 to 12 inches high. The planter would need to be modified to include a fluted or ripple coulter ahead of the shoe and to prepare a small strip for County roads in statewide program More than 2,200 miles of roads throughout the state of Indiana will receive treatment as part of a new statewide maintenance program of the Indiana State Highway Commission, Richard A. Boehning, commission chairman, announced today. “This program is basically preventative maintenance and should result in substantial savings in maintenance costs o)er the next few years,” Boehning said. State road 13 in Wabash and Kosciusko county has been recommended for wedge and level, type one seal, from 4.74 miles south of SR 14 to SR 14; state road 15 has been recommended for wedge and level from Silver Lake to Warsaw for a total of 10.75 miles; and state road 19 has been recommended for wedge and level from US 30 to county road 800 W for a total of 7.99 miles. The total cost of the 1973 preventative maintenance ' program will be in excess of 4.7 million dollars. Work consists primarily of bituminous patch, bituminous wedge and level lays, sealing cracks and joints, filling cracks and joints, bituminous seal coats and short sections of bituminous resurface.

planting. A seed press wheel would be advisable. Because of the short season, narrow rows at 20 inches or less would be a necessity to produce a canopy. This could be done by splitting the middles with a conventional planter as exact row spacing is not important. A herbicide is important at the time of planting. Weed control is an absolute necessity since there is no back up system. Chemicals should hold , the weeds in check for five or six weeks until the canopy of soybean leaves closes off the sunlight. The key to this operation is moisture. It is useless to do it unless there is enough moisture to support germination and emergence. This means that if a good rain does not occur by July 10, you may as well forget it. If there is good moisture at that time then chances of success are at least 80 per cent. _
