FOR WARMER WEATHER — Persons who are making plans to view the 1973 Mermaid Festival parade on Saturday are hoping for warmer weather. Last year cold weather hampered the festival and parade viewers huddled, in blankets to keep warm during the two hour and 45 minute parade. '

Past queens of the Mermaid Festival When Rhonda Butts crowns a new queen on Saturday night she will have passed the now famous and coveted crown to the 28th “Queen of Lakes.” Who will she be? Have you forgotten who the former “Queen of Lakes” are? They are listed here to jog your memory:

1963 cuties at Webster this evening < Featured in the 1973 Cutie King and Queen contest and parade tonight (Wednesday) at North Webster will be the cuties of 10 years ago. The queen of 1963 was Ann Kaiser of Milford. The 1963 king was Randy Carey of Leesburg. Randy will not be at the festival and will be represented by the 1963 runner-up Gary Vanator of North Webster. Ann and Gary will ride in a decorated convertible in the parade and then will be given the honor of crowning the new Cutie King and Queen. Annette Lear of Winter, lowa and Steve White of North Webster will reign over the festivities as 1972 king and queen. The parade will begin at 7 p.m. with the contest following at 8. Telephone company to enter 'Macksine' in festival parade The United Telephone company has entered “Macksine” in the Mermaid Festival parade set to step out at 4 p.m. Saturday. “Macksine” is one of two antique 1927 Mack line trucks still in existance. She is worth $25,000. “Macksine” has a rugged and glorious history. She was purchased new in 1927 by the Southern Indiana Telephone company, which was later acquired by United. When new equipment replaced “Macksine” she was taken to Aurora where she was stored for 20 years. In November of 1971 she was rescued when United officials decided to have the truck restored. She was cleaned and rebuilt. Her seats were filled with curled horse hair, the same as that used in the finest cars of that time. She was painted. To make her lighter the 2,000 pounds of winch and other telephone tools were removed and replaced with plastic replicas to make her look authentic. It took seven long months to renew her and make her ready for parading in festivals and fairs.
