Rules given for ‘Queen of Lakes’
Have you ever wondered what kind of rules are set forth for the “Queen of Lakes” contestants? Or, what the cohtestants and winners receive for their participation? The contest is open to any unmarried young lady between the ages of 16 and 26 inclusive as of July 1, 1973. Each contestant will be known at the festival by the name of her home town, lake, school, sorority, etc., as designated by the Mermaid Festival committee and her sponsor. Contestants will appear in formal dress and in bathing suits. Formals may be the color and design of the contestants own choosing. .The rules, however/ state the fact that bathing suits shall be of one piece and no cutouts. Judging is done by experts on a point system of 1-10 on each of the following 10 classifications — beauty of hair, eyes, neck, shoulders, bust, waist, ankles, feet, carriage and personality. Preliminary judging was done last evening at an informal reception for the contestants. Swim suit competition and naming of swim suit winners will be held on Friday, June 29. The 1973 “Queen of the Lakes” will be crowned at the conclusion of the festival Saturday. Prixes The winner will reign as Indiana’s “Queen of Lakes” for one year. She will ride in the annual Mermaid parade in 1974 on a specially prepared queen’s float and will preside over the 1974
5 5,000 in awards to be presented at 1973 festival The North Webster Lions club, annual sponsors of Indiana’s famed Mermaid Festival, is pleased to announce the International Palace of Sports public foundation has made a grant of $5,000 in Lady of the Lake awards to sponsors of the 1973 winning contestants. The money is to be used for civic, / charitable or educational purposes, as the winning sponsors so desire. In the festival parade band contest there will be trophies and cash prizes given in two cagetSries"— for schools (grades nine, 12) with enrollments of 600 or less and for schools with enrollments of 600 or over. First prizes will be trophies and SSOO cash for each school. The second place school in each category will receive S2OO and a trophy and third, fourth and fifth [daces will be a trophy and SIOO. The sponsor of the “Queen of Lakes” will receive SSOO while the first runner-up’s sponsor will receive S2OO and the other princesses’ sponsors will receive SIOO each. The sponsor of the first place winner in the tournament of knights will receive SSOO with the second place winner’s sponsor receiving S2OO and the third, fourth and fifth place winners receiving SIOO. coronation ceremonies. She will have possession of the beautiful rhinestone Mermaid crown during the year of her reign. The new “Queen of Lakes” will receive a beautiful trophy, S2OO in cash and a lovely engraved wrist watch. First runner-up will receive SIOO in cash and a trophy, second runner-up SSO and a trophy. Two princesses will be chosen and will receive $25 each. The first five place winners will be named Mermaid Princesses for 1973 and each will receive a Mermaid princess ribbon, princess crown and charm to keep. From those five the queen will be chosen. All will ride in the 1974 parade. The sponsor of the “Queen of Lakes” will receive SSOO with the first runner-up’s sponsor receiving S2OO. The sponsor of the second runner-up and the two Mermaid princesses will receive SIOO each. The sponsors will also receive SSOO for the first place convertible or decorated float and S2OO for the second place conveyance. Third, fourth and fifth place sponsors will receive SIOO each. Each contestant will ride in a decorated convertible or float in the Mermaid parade on Saturday afternoon at 4. The convertible or float must be furnished by the contestant or her sponsor. The name by which she will be known at the festival must be on her conveyance. If a winner’s sponsor is jnot a non-profit organization, 4he sponsors’ jarize will be awarded to the charitable organization of their choice.

Cindy is being sponsored by the Mariner drive-inn on Kale Island. She will be a junior at Wawasee high school next fall. Cindy is 16-years-old and has blonde hair and green eyes. She weighs 110 pounds and stands five feet, three inches tall. She is interested in cherrleading, skiing, girls track team and boating. Cindy’s entry in the queen contest makes a first for the festival since her sister Lee Ann is also a contestant. Lee Ann is Miss Kappa Omicorn.

Community Resources Workshop is offered to county teachers

Purdue and the Chamber of Commerce emphasized that the objectives of the course are to give teachers (anyone K through 12) added insight into govern-

ment, the courts, social services, business and industry. Further, it will equip teachers to relate textbook materials to real life situations. Dr. Arthur W. Friedel of the Purdue faculty here, who will direct the workshop, noted that the program this year would be divided as follows: First week — government and social services.

A total of 18 girls are entered in the “Queen of Lakes” contest this year at the North Webster Mermaid Festival. Each of these girls is hoping she will be crowned queen on Saturday night. The reigning queen Miss Rhonda Butts of Bremen is overseeing the festivities of the week and will concede her crown to her successor after final judging on Saturday. The girls attended the Mermaid Ball on Friday night of last week and a reception held in their honor last night. Swim suit competition will be held on Friday night with each queen contestant riding on a float w decorated convertible in the parade on Saturday. Finals of the queen contest begin at 8 p.m. Saturday. Augsburger's to re-open Webster store July 3
Augsburger’s, Inc., owners of retail grocery stores in Milford, Syracuse and North Webster, will re-open its burned-out North Webster store on Tuesday, July 3, according to present plans. The North Webster store, the newest in the three-store chain, was robbed and burned out on Tuesday, April 24, according to Larry Kinsey, manager of the North Webster store. He said 95 per cent of the shelving and equipment in the store is new.
