Mb BLAST ‘HOBO JUNGLE* — Parts of the town of Syracuse were rocked last Thursday afternoon by the dynamite blasting of huge concrete abutments in “Hobo Jungle,” remains of the Sandusky Cement Co. plant at the east end of Medusa street. In charge were Elkhart police Lt. James Bowlby and patrolman Wayne Campbell, of that city’s demolition squad. When Chet Elder, developer and new owner of fabled “Hobo Jungle,” found heavy equipment would not phase the huge concrete structures, the demolition team was brought in to do the job. ® As much as 14 pounds of dynamite were used in a single blast, and debris filled the air for hundreds of feet around. By dynamiting, the concrete boulders were pulverized, to make use of conventional equipment practical in clearing the five-acre site. in the three column above photo workmen are looking over one cement slab following a blast, and found it sufficiently pulverized. In the top nhotn apove, developer Elder is taking some photos for his files, standing on a pile of earth removed to provide for burial of the concrete. Elder plans to make this tract into one of the most fashionable developments in the lakes area.

Smaller Indiana wheat crop WEST LAFAYETTE — Indiana farmers are expected to harvest a sharply smaller wheat crop this summer. State-federal agricultural statisticians- at Purdue university estimate the crop at 28 million bushels, as of June 1. This represents a 20 per cent drop in production from last year.
