Social injustice

Dear Editor: Within the last decade the term “social injustice” has been applied to many conditions in which the acts of our society have been questioned. I was once one who scoffed the term. However, I now stand ready to unite with any person that has a just reason for crying out “social injustice.” I was driving home from work, and I ran a stop sign. I was duly stopped and ticketed by a county officer. I was to appear in court before the Warsaw Justice of the Peace at 8 p.m. the next evening. However, due to an 11 hour work day combined with running a jack hammer, and shoveling dirt all day I was unable to appear. I did not call and I realize that I should have, but I didn’t. Friday was the same and I didn’t get off of work in time to get to a phone to call his Honor. The week end was next and I would have gone in to see him then but it seems that his Honor is not in on week ends. So, Monday was the first real chance I had to call. Due to the fact that we have no phone at our house, I had to go to a friend’s house to make the long distance phone call. I tried to explain my reason for not appearing, however, could not because our public servant would not let me

get a word in edgewise. He asked me if I would act the same way if the same conditions would prevail, to this I said yes. At this point I wanted to tell him that I would, however, call and tell him I would not be able to appear if the same conditions would prevail, however, he would not hear me out. He said what he wanted and then promptly hung up on me. I was shocked at the way he acted and called again, but he once again hung up on me. This is a disgraceful way for a man of justice to act. I wanted to explain my reason for not showing up and to say I was sorry, but he would not allow me this right. It seems that our public servant would not listen to a member of the public he is to serve.

I did then go to Warsaw to see this justice of the peace. I was once again unable to explain because his Honor proceeded to “chew me out” before a host of people waiting to see him. This it seems was to demonstrate his power over the common citizen, and to prove that he was the justice for our county. If this is an example of justice in our county, then I feel it is time for a change. I paid my fine and feel that I did my duty as a citizen. I have as of yet not received any apology from our public servant. I realize the nearest thing to an apology I will receive from him is a receipt showing that I paid for my ticket. I also realize that the king will remain on his throne, and rule over his people with an iron hand, a hand that knows only the feeling of supreme power. Thank you, David W.
