Asked what he would do then, he said, “Oh, play golf, fish a little . . . I’ll find something to do.” Frantz is perhaps one of the most well known citizens of the county. He was Warsaw “Man of the Year” in 1971, and was

humble in accepting the honor, comparing himself to a donkey in the Kentucky Derby. He has been farm extension agent, later renamed area extension agent, in Kosciusko county for 15 years, coming from Bluffton where he held a similar post for several years. Don is a native of Tippecanoe (Lafayette) county, a graduate of Purdue university, and left there just after Pearl Harbor in 1941 as a draftee. He served in the central Pacific as a naval officer and was struck by a piercing piece of shrapnel during the invasion of Saipan in June 1944 (“about a week after the Normandy invasion in France”) and was left for dead. The shrapnel went into his head just in front of his right eat, coming out at his left collarbone. He found his way back to Honolulu and was later returned home. He left the service as a captain. Don speaks of two options he has on retirement, either “mustering out” the end of this year or next June. Anyway, he notes, his mind has been made up to retirement. Margo Kissinger, clerk in the North Webster post office, calls Presidential advisor Henry Kissinger “Uncle Henry.” In jest, of course. Nobody is real sure yet, but North Webster Mermaid Festival officials are still planning on getting Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz to appear for their big festival.

For sure, though, they do have secretary of state Larry Conrad coming as parade marshal. Townsman Wilbur Ward says, “All we see in the papers these days is bad news. Why not write up something good like how nice the Syracuse cemetery looked on Memorial day.” We heard that comment from a number of sources this year. A tip of our hat to the cemetery board and its on-duty workmen. Here’s a sign we saw: Drink milk, the udder uncola. Nice to see Mrs. Carl Richey of Lake Wawasee again. Her brother, the late Dick James, was secretary of state and Lt. Gov. of Indiana a number of years ago. Floyd Fithian, the Purdue associate professor of history who made the good showing in the second district congressional race a year ago, spent some time in Syracuse and other Kosciusko county towns Friday talking to friends concerning his possible re-running for the same office. In 1972 he lost to incumbent Earl Landgrebe by a 18,600 plurality, while President Nixon carried a 92,000 plurality. Fithian won only two counties, Starke and his home county of Tippecanoe. In Kosciusko county, a GOP bulwark, Landgrebe received 12,320 votes to 8,120 for Fithian, with Landgrebe winning by a 4,200 plurality. Fithian comments that Richard Boehning, now head of the state highway commission, has announced he will not seek the GOP congressional nomination again, so the coast could be cleared for a re-match of the Landgrebe-Fithian race. It could be interesting. The Warsaw paper is incensed at the county council’s voting for the local option tax against their strong editorial stand opposing the tax. The paper is out to “get” the council members, to the point of urging Democrats to come up with strong candidates for

council posts in the next election. “Reub” has “ordered” Bill Mollenhour to get busy and write a news release to be issued by county Democrats against the council action. Could this be another Watergate, where the GOP is trying to run both parties? Democrats won’t be caught in this one. It’s interesting to note that rural counties have voted for the local option tax, while metropolitan counties have voted against it. Kind of a city labor vote against a rural conservative vote. Miriam Rock of 506 S. Front street, Syracuse, has some 1915 clippings out of the old Syracuse Journal, of a column written by “Uncle Lew,” whoever that is, concerning her father, the late Wakefield Wilt, and the Wilt factory. One of these items is reprinted here: Moves To Syracuse Mr. Wakefield Wilt and family last week moved to Syracuse where the former will erect a factory for the purpose of manufacturing spectacle boxes, etc. We understand the business men of that town have donated two lots to him in order to get him to locate in that town. We trust he may have an abundance of success. Regarding the above, the Syracuse Journal says, “A subscription of 1150.00 has been raised in Syracuse to secure the location of a box factory which will be erected at the Southern end of Harrison street by W. M. Wilt of Nappanee, formerly foreman of the Lamb Bros. & Green plant there. For the present wooden mailing boxes will be manufactured but later a good novelty of some kind will probably be added. The building will be of wood with about 900 square feet of floor space. The people of Syracuse heartily welcome Mr. Wilt. He has already rented a property and has moved his family here.” We were told that more Syracuse and lake merchants should promote local picture post cards for sale. Not a better way to promote the area. Bob Skillen, president of Vega Corp., did not exert any pressure on Lou Kuilema to resign from the Syracuse town board, Lou states. On the contrary, he gave me all sorts of encouragement. Skillen’s dad, the late Charles Skillen, is remembered as longtime head of the Indiana Democratic Central Committee. Kuilema also states he received nothing but encouragement from Al Moses, second in command at Vega where Lou is sales-service coordinator. Deposed coach Tom Spear is leaving Wawasee high in a blaze of glory, it would appear. His baseball team won the sectional championship at Goshen Friday by defeating Goshen 1-0 on Spear’s last day on the job. He is going to Harrison high school (consolidation of Battle Ground, Klondike and East Tippecanoe) as head coach. After the sectional victory, coach Spear said, “You can bet I’ll be with the boys at the regional in South Bend.” The Friday victory represents the first sectional won by a boys’ team of either North Webster, Milford or Syracuse, or of the new Wawasee high school since the spring of 1967 when Syracuse high school baseball coach Eldon Ummel (now WHS athletic director) took his team to a sectional championship at Nappanee. “LAKELAND LOCAL Mr. and Mrs. Karl Hoover of Saint Cloud, Fla., are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Geiger of Milford. They arrived Saturday and will be leaving on June 11 to return to Florida. While in the area they will be visiting friends and relatives in the Milford and Syracuse communities as well as other communities.
