THE MAIL-JOURNAL Wed., May 30,1973 Nigerian church leader in New Paris <A Nigerian church leader will be hosted on June 1-3 by the Brethren Churches of New Paris. Meetings will be at the Bethany Church of the Brethren, south of New Paris on U.S. 6 at 9 a.m., at the New Paris Brethren church at 10:30 a.m. and at the New Paris Church of the Brethren at 7 4>.m. on Sunday, June 3. Rev. Mamadu Mshelbila is part of a five-member team representing the Lardin Gabas Church of Christ in the Sudan in visits to more than 100 Church of the Brethren and Brethren Church congregations from the Atlantic to the Pacific during April, May and June. Lardin Gabas is in the North Eastern State of Nigeria, an important nation in West Africa. Rev. Mamadu arrived in the States to help Brethren celebrate 50 years of Christian ministries in Nigeria. He will share his faith and the culture of his people for the mutual benefit of fuller understanding and appreciation of the church in Nigeria and the work being supported there. The Lardin Gabas church numbers 44 congregations with numerous preaching points, around 19,000 members with a growth at the rate of some 1,500 per year. _ Rev. Mamadu at 39 is the principal of Kulp Bible school, a Christian rural life training center. He was named to that position in 1971. He holds the diploma of the Theological College of Northern Nigeria, an achievement obtained after he had already been trained as a teacher and served as a primary school principal. He chairs the Lardin Gabas church, being the chief elected officer of the church. As such, he moderates the church’s annual conference and a committee of twenty-two persons charged with overseeing work in the area. Like many church leaders in Nigeria, Rev. Mamadu was first drawn to Christianity by a medical problem which brought him in life to the Garkida hospital community. He has been described as a “church leader who stands with his feet in two worlds.” The mark of his clan etched on his broad face is a reminder of the old world and royal family from which he comes. Yet he works at achieving unity among churches of numerous tribes as they head pell-mell into a new day. Rev. Mamadu is married and the father of eight children. He is a capable speaker in English and an outstanding personality. Rev. Purdy to Concord church Rev. Travis Purdy recently returned to the Syracuse area to become minister of the Concord United Methodist church. Rev. Purdy was pastor of the First Methodist church of Syracuse 38 years ago. This will be a “rural yoke fellowship adventure,” serving the regular parish, those belonging to other fellowships and those with no church affiliation. The program will be designed for witness and service, adjusted to everyday experience. For 15 years, Rev. Purdy has been state vocational rehabilitation counselor, serving eight different counties in northern Indiana, with area offices in South Bend. In the past seven years he has served Elkhart and Kosciusko counties and has been the state counselor for the Cardinal Learning Center and Workshop in Warsaw and the Elkhart Rehabilitation Center and Workshop in Elkhart. The Concord church will pursue the general plan of the early Methodist church in worship, prayer, service, fellowship and mutual sharing. Regular services will be held at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. starting the new conference year Sunday, June 3. The church is located west of Lake Wawasee and north (rs Dewart Lake on CR 330E and Rookstool road. » Whitko band members to report June 4 The tirst summer band rehearsal is scheduled for Monday, June 4,6:30 p.m. at the Whitko high school.
