“LIFE IS like a bikini: It’s what you put in it that counts.” Or, so we hear tell! MRS. HARRY (Jane) Schultz was pictured in the last issue of “the telechronicle,” United Telephone Company’s employees magazine. She received a service award for being with the company for 25 years. Jane works in the company’s Syracuse office, having served at Milford for a number of years prior to the closing of the office here. IT’S ANOTHER case of a home town girl making good. Miss Suzanne Dewart, pretty daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randall Dewart of Hickory, N. C.» formerly of Milford, was chosen “Miss Hickory” in a recent city-wide run off. An area newspaper referred to Suzanne as “a real southern belle.” She is to compete in state finals in June, with the state winner going to Atlantic City, N. J., for the Miss America

pageant in September. Suzanne graduated from Milford high school in 1966 and is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Dewart and Mr. and Mrs. Amos Om of Milford. THE AMERICAN Legion parade on Memorial Day seems to get bigger and better each year. The only thing we failed to understand is why a large number of persons seated along the parade route failed to rise when the flag passed. We are continually amazed at the lack of respect shown for this country’s flag now days. NEXT YEAR when the Memorial Day parade passes in revue you will want to pay special attention to the bouquet of poppies on the front of the Gold Star Mother’s car. We have been told the bouquet
contains poppies from the 1940’s and that each year new poppies are added to the spray. A LOT of comments were overheard on how nice the Milford junior high band looked in their red, white and blue outfits and the shoe pom pons which they wore. The band was under the direction of Jim White. Mrs. Paul Brembeck, Milford junior high home ec instructor, and some of her students made the red sashes while members of the seventh grade band made the pom pons. WAS DELLA B’S face ever red Monday! It seems she was trying to put on her coat in order to run an errand when she accidentally hit the fire alarm at the junior high school. Bells were sounding but Mrs. B. is the only one who was effected. She thought the fire department would be arriving shortly to check on the alarm. While Della was worried about the loud bells numerous persons continued eating their chicken in the gym, quite unconcerned about the loud ringing. It took three persons to stop the bells from ringing — Superintendent of schools Don Arnold who was on hand to help with the barbecue, Wawasee high school vice principal and former Milford principal Donn D. Kesler who was in the gym eating at the time the alarm sounded, and custodian Oliver Replogle. THE CHICKEN was delicious Monday. In fact, it was a complete sell out with everything closing down early. Persons arriving shortly after 1 p.m. had to be turned away for lack of anything to serve. MRS. STAN (Betty Auer) Scott will be mistress of ceremonies at the annual alumni banquet set for Wawasee high school on Saturday night. This will be the 49th annual banquet. EVERYONE IS talking about the price of meat but what about other items. One staff member bought it but she couldn’t believe it! Lettuce: 79 cents per head!!! Ridiculous! It was only 29 cents a few weeks ago. Can anyone explain this high increase? Women hold banquet May 24 The mother-daughter banquet, sponsored by the Women’s Christian Service Council of the Syracuse Church of God, was held Thursday, May 24, at Hex Grange northeast of Syracuse. The stewardship committee consisting of Mrs. Jerry Stutzman, Mrs. Walter Burcham, Mrs. Paul Yeager and Mrs. Lee Adams was in charge of the program. Mrs. Oliver Hibschman gave the invocation, after which the 78 mothers and daughters present enjoyed a salad bar. After a welcome by Mrs. Stutzman, Mrs. Louis Firestone gave a tribute to daughters, and her daughter, Mrs. George Yerger, responded with a tribute to mothers. Mrs. Adams read from Proverbs 31. Mrs. Burcham was in charge of the program which was entitled “Memory lane; Isn’t she beautiful?” Mrs. Burcham presented flowers to Mrs. Robert Wolfe, Mrs. Mark Wagner and Ellen Freeman. Group singing was led by Mrs. Gary Firestone accompanied by pianist Mrs. Richard Coy. LAKELAND LOCALS Mrs. Iva Neff of Milford accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Russell Whitehead of r 1 Syracuse to North Hollywood, Calif., recently to spend two weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Prentice Kindig. Mrs. Neff, Mrs. Whitehead and Mrs. Kindig are sisters. Mrs. Neff returned by plane on Sunday, May 27. Mrs. Sarah Slabaugh of Milford entertained for 53 persons for dinner Monday at her home. Those attending came from Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.
