baiziNjfei® AROUND L M * - An ardent golfer is something else. He’s going to play golf, once his mind has been made up, come rain or shine. And such was the case with insurance executive Dave Smith when we caught him at Maxwelton ready to tee off in a downpour one day last week. He has all the appurtenances, as oie can plainly see. How come all the best newspaper proofreaders are the ones who buy, not work for, the papers? It would seem that even the birds are flocking to the Fabric Nook these days. The gang at Glon Furniture and the Nook have been watching a robin family this spring as it built a nest over the outside light fixture. Then, last Thursday two of the eggs hatched, to the delight of all the robin-watchers. Evelyn Fawley makes the best coffee cake. Just ask any of the WHS office staff and this writer. The Syracuse-Wawasee Garden club tries to have an example of horticulture on display at the library, a different piece each month. Visit the library soon if you’d like to see an ivy trained into a wreath. It was done by Mrs. Frank Johnson, r 1 Syracuse, who is not a member of the club but who surely has a green thumb. Incidentally, if you have an idea along this line, contact Mrs. Fred Johnson, r 1 Syracuse. This little gem came from the lips of Bruce Frey, local attorney : “Wherever there’s a Watergate, there’s a millhouse.” This column received a letter signed “The security of my job makes me unable to sign this,” and comes off with this advice: “Why don’t you investigate the

Watergate at this school — the “resignation” of two coaches with good records and the people who have been told to keep quiet about it by “the administration.” In a light moment at the rededication services of the Syracuse Masonic lodge Saturday afternoon Grand Master Forrest A. Wakeman told this one: A new young florist received his first order from a bank (resident who was about to open a branch bank and it was for an appropriate floral piece for the grand opening. When it arrived, the staid banker was shocked to see the inscription which read “Rest In Peace.” When he phoned the young florist about the obvious error, the young man said, “Don’t feel bad. Somewhere in this city there’s a floral piece on a casket whose inscription reads ‘Congratulations on Your New Home.” ’ Contrary to some reports, coaching salaries are no secret in the Lakeland community schools. Coaches receive varying amounts, we have learned, depending upon length of sport season, number of after school hours, the responsibility involved and the attention given to a particular sport by the public. Coaching pay for men and women range from 1300 to SI,BOO at the high school level. What’s in a name? This is a real question at times. Dale Butts, manager of Wawasee Boat Co., said every once in a while someone comes into his place of business and asks “where do you make the boats,” thinking Wawasee Boat Co., for all its years in business, is a boat manufacturing company. Syracuse Library Notes By BONNIE BJELLA The summer reading club of the Syracuse public library will be beginning its program, Friday, June 1, for children in grades one-five. A member will receive a sticker for each book he or she has read. At the end of the 10week program those having read one or more books will receive a ribbon and those having read 10 or more books will receive a reading certificate along with the ribbon. Awards will be presented at the end of the summer program. Children may begin enrolling in the club the last week in May, and should be ready to start reading for stickers June 1. They may enroll at a later date, however, if they so wish. Alan Hollar is graduate Alan Hollar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Junior Hollar, Oakwood park, Syracuse, graduated Sunday, May 20, from Indiana Central college. Mr. and Mrs. Hollar attended ceremonies in Indianapolis. Alan, a Syracuse high school alumnus, earned a B.S. in education, and plans to teach fifth or sixth grade in the Indianapolis area.

Rain didn't spoil Monday's activities

Despite the rains which fell intermittently throughout Monday the community chicken barbecue and the Milford Area Development Council’s activities proved to be very successful ventures. The rains held off until after the American Legion sponsored parade and the salute to the fallen war heros which was held at the cemetery. They did, however, force the barbecue to be moved indoors. Other activities were also held in the junior high school gym. The |iT T * < OKI fi* MARTIN DeLUNA AND CRIS BAUMGARTNER
