M-J SCHOLARSHIP — Charles Rapp is shown above with MailJournal publisher Arch Baumgartner after Mr. Baumgartner presented him the second annual Mail-Journal athletic scholarship. The scholarship is for |2OO and may be used at the school of his choice. Last year’s winner,Dallas Ummel, is attending Purdueuniversity.

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP ACHIEVEMENT AWARD — Thomas Prickett of Tom Socks sportswear, Wawasee Village, is shown above as he presents the athletic scholastic achievement award to Charles Rapp. Rapp, one of 13 Wawasee high school honor students, also received the National Merit scholarship commended student award. Young Rapp has a 3.977 average. He has seven major letters, participating in cross country, wrestling, basketball and baseball.

The annual high school awards day was held on Friday afternoon at Wawasee high school. Mrs. Maxine Robinson of the guidance department of the school served as mistress of ceremonies for the day. Department awards were {resented as follows: Agriculture — Kip Tom Music — Connie Christner Art — Brad Butler Home Economics — Gail Benson Industrial education — Dwight Dean Physical education— Gail Brown, girl’s and Jim Mench, boy’s Business education — Yvonne Spurting Vocational education — Kent Sawyer A total of 121 students received perfect attendance awards from vice principal Donn D. Kesler. Michael Zurcher received honors for taking the national high school math exam. The athletic scholastic achievement award was presented to Charles Rapp from Tom Socks by Tom Prickett. The Robert W. Ellis Golf trophy was presented to Gregory Ummel by Mr. and Mrs. James Ellis of Indianapolis in memory of their son, a Syracuse high school graduate, who was killed in Viet Nam on February 28, 1968. Hie Karen Wiggs Drudge art memorial was given by the class of 1969 to Christy Sweatland. Mrs. Drudge, a member of the class of 1969, was killed in an auto accident. Hie Robert W. The scholarship is for SIOO. The Future Teachers of America scholarship was {resented by the high school FTA to Connie Christner. The James H. Turner memorial scholarship in the amount of SIOO was presented by the deceased teacher’s widow to Rhonda Lawson. Hoosier scholars were named as follows: Lynn Black, Steve Bryant, Connie Christner, Susan Clark, Dixie Darr, Cheryle Hadley, Rhonda Hurd, Georgina Morehouse, Mark Randall, Charles Rapp, Randall Rich, Kim Shock, Valerie Steffen, Craig Tucker, Gregory Ummel, Randy (Mark) Vanlaningham and Michael Zurcher. Arch Baumgartner presented The Mail-Journal athletic scholarship to Charles Rapp. Student body president Steve Bryant presented awards to Cecelia Leal and Jorge Peisoto, both from the country of Brazil, as a memento of their attendance at Wawasee high school. Principal Henry L. Smith noted the fact Charles Rapp was a national merit scholarship commended student and named the following seniors to the honors section: Caron A. Carr, Connie M. Christner, Susan □ark, Rhonda E. Hurd, Cindy L. Kinney, Michael L. Klenke, Timothy M. Moser, Charles L. Rapp, Valerie J. Steffen, David Stichter, Craig L. Tucker, Darcy K. Wolferman and Michael L. Zurcher.
James Herrman, and Brother Richard McGrath, all of Wawasee Prep. A staff of resource people will also attend. It is planned the first several days will be spent in prayerful reflection over some of the issues that affect religious life today. The last few days will be spent on business, reassessing apostolates in the light of changing needs and resources, especially in the field of education. The meeting is planned to last about ten days. All members of the order are welcome to be present as observers, and advance indicatons point to a large audience.

‘MISS MILFORD* — Andrea Lynn Newman, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Newman of Milford, will be “Miss Milford” in this year’s Kosciusko county fair Queen contest. She is being sponsored by the Milford Area Development Council. The young beauty is a junior at Wawasee high school, weighs 126 pounds, and is five feet, six inches tall, with long brown hair and brown eyes. She likes to read and bicycle, and is a member of the school and church choir and of the Y-Teens.

DR. NOBLE NEFF SCHOLARSHIP — Hiis year’s Dr. Noble W. Neff memorial scholarship was presented by Wawasee high school vice principal Donn D. Kesler to Craig Tucker. The scholarship, in memory of the late Van Buren township trustee and former Milford high school coach, is for SIOO.
PL ® Cent®* « IL Hie Lakeland Youth Center is interested in forming a girls softball league for the summer. A meeting will be held Thursday, May 24, at 7 p.m. to discuss the possibilities. All girls in junior or senior high school are urged to attend. Any adults interested in helping with the league are asked to attend also. The youth center will be operating with new hours this summer. It will be open 1-3 p.m. Tuesday-Friday for elementary and junior high students, and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 6-10 p.m. Saturday for senior highers. Some of the summer activities will be movies, June 8; a bike rodeo, June 16; a fishing derby, June 22; a free throw contest, July 6; a physical fitness test, July 10-12; and a pet show, July 13. Call the youth center for more details. Kiwanis club sets bicycle inspection The month of May is annually designated as American Bicycle month. A bicycle inspection will be held at the North Webster and Milford schools (elementary and junior high) on Tuesday, May 29, during school hours. Should it be raining on the 29th, the inspection will be held on Wednesday, May 30. The bicycle inspection is being sponsored by the Lakeland Kiwanis club under the supervision of the Indiana state police and assisted by the local police

and Lakeland school personnel. “Safe Bicycling,” a 13 minute, 16 mm, color, sound film was rented from the National Safety Council by the Lakeland Kiwanis club and made available for showing in the Lakeland Community elementary and junior high schools. School bus hit by Leesburg woman A Warsaw Community school bus was damaged S4OO Monday at 3:35 p.m. when an auto driven by Mrs. June Irene Morehead, 50, box 7 Leesburg, collided with it. Driver of the bus was Lawrence L. Randall, 65, box 163 Leesburg. The collision occurred on CR 400 N and 150 W. Following the accident Mrs. Morehead was cited for failure to yield the right of way. She was treated for a bump on the head and a slight cut on her ear. Damage to her auto was set at $650 by deputy sheriff Ronald Robinson who investigated. Culver Military stops Warriors Members of the Culver Military golf team stopped the Warrior golf team last night (Tuesday) in a match played at Culver. The score was 166 to 157. ) Hie Warrior B-team won its match 169-171. Scores for the Warrior A-team members were as follows: Greg Ummel 37, Sam Ludwig 41, Steve Coverstone and Jon Owens 44 and Bob Bauman 45. Scores for the Culver team were as follows: Tim Perot 37, Thompson Randall 39, Bill Snider 40, Todd Lankford 41 and Greg .aton 44. The Warriors now have a 10-6 record. The B-team record is 13-2. The next match will be Thursday when the Warriors will meet Goshen at South Shore. BUNKER HILL The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on June 17, 1775.

JAMES H. TURNER SCHOLARSHIP — Rhonda Lawson was presented the James H. Turner memorial scholarship in an amount of SIOO. The scholarship was presented by band director David Blackwell on behalf of Turner’s widow. Turner was band director at North Webster junior high school prior to his death.

IN MEMORY OF ROBERT W. ELLIS — Each year Mr. and Mrs. James Ellis of Indianapolis, formerly of Syracuse, present a golf trophy and a scholarship in memory of their son, Robert W. Ellis, who was killed in Viet Nam on February 29, 1968. Ellis was a graduate of Syracuse high school and an avid golfer. This year’s scholarship and trophy were presented by Wawasee high school teacher Philip Fawley to Craig Tucker and Gregory Ummel. Tucker, left, received the scholarship which is for 1500 while Ummel, right, is shown with his golf trophy.
